When I woke up on the morning of January 25 and looked at my cell phone I saw serveral of missed calls from other Officers. I knew something bad had occured. As I stared at the phone (frozen with fear) another Officer was calling. I accepted the call. The Officer informed me that you were hit by a car and parished at the scene. Not wanting to deal with reality I just cried my self back to sleep. When I woke up, It seemed surreal but I had my cell phone as a reminder (the miss calls and messages) that it was real. My God! Give the Officers that were on the scene the strength to deal with what they had witnessed on that tragic evening and to give the rest of the APD family the ability to cope with our substantial loss. To the family of Gail, we are grieving with you. You are also in our thoughts and prayes. God give us all the strength to cope with lossing the Cordial Officer with the Charismatic smile. Our hearts are heavy with sorrow. As time passes the memory of you and your kind spirit will help ease our pain.

Your presence will be missed immensely.

You were one of the best mothers I knew. I am so lucky I got to know you when I started college and got to room with your awesome daughter. You were a wonderful person and always smiling, Jasmine is just like you :) You were and always will be my favorite cop. I'm glad you touched so many others lives with your presence like you touched mine.

Beautiful on the inside and out. A dedicated mother to her beautiful daughter. She was also very dedicated dispatcher and officer for the Atlanta Police Deparment. Always met you with a smile and a hug. She was role model for all female officers and will continue to be.

Gail you will be missed. Carry on for us in heaven. Until we meet again. Love you.

My family went through a very similar circumstance 6 weeks ago when my uncle (Blaine County Undersheriff Pat Pyette) was killed by a driver while directing traffic. The Pyette Family understands the pain of this tragic and monumental loss. I can't even type this without crying. My heart goes out to the family and friends of Officer Gail Thomas.

Gail, you were such a great partner and friend. I still tell stories about our foot beat and bike patrol days. My family and I were so heartbroken when we got the news. I will always remember working with you and I will continue to share the memories with others. I respected you the most for being such a great person and mother to your daughter.

Together Again

It won't be long, til we are all together again.
I have a song that we can sing forever, and then
We'll have the time to recall
all the joy that we've known with our friends, forgotten friends
And memories that somehow we've misplaced.

It will be soon, seeing our friends who've told us goodbye.
Through all the gloom, all reunited in the sky.
And we will stand, hand in hand,
in the sight of the Lord and we'll sing praises to God
of the joy that His presence will bring.

Try not to cry, (it won't be long)
Dry your eyes, (til we are all together again)
Try not to cry, (I have a song)
Dry your eyes, (that we can sing)
Together again.
It won't be long, oh no, it won't be long.

Such a beautiful smile! Go home to God, Gail.

January 26, 2012

I want to touch on Officer Thomas's softer side. She was always there for me as an officer. But she was also there for me when it came to raising teenage daughters. We offten spoke about our daughters. Gail gave the best encouragement and words of wisdom for all of life's occurrences. That's just how she was, and will always be in my heart.

Thought I would share:

His Judgment Day:
The officer stood and faced his God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shinning, Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Officer, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek To my church have you been true?"
The officer squared his shoulder and said, "No, Lord, I guess I aint, Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was rough, And sometimes I've been violent Because the streets are tough.
But I never took a penny That wasn't mine to keep.. Though I worked a lot of overtime, when the bills got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept an unmanly tear.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't...I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne, where the saints often trod. As the officer waited quietly for the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, Officer. You've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell"
