The Andy I Knew January 11, 2012

All of our stories point to the good that was you.
Andy, you were flawless all around.
“Hey!” you’d say, smacking my arm with the back of your hand.
So eager to share a joke, a funny story, or a good score for the Yankees.
Wherever you went, you brought joy and goodness.
You had a way of lifting us out of the commotion,
Reminding us there is always good to be found,
If we look in the right direction.

Who else would go out for ice cream sundaes or paper towels in the middle of the night?
They say you even went out on the streets, just looking for a wrong to right.
The minute someone expressed the slightest desire or need, you were “on the case”.
With the vision of a super hero, you set out to make the world a better place.
And not once did I hear you complain.

Nine years is too long for one night to last.
It must have been super hero in you,
Holding on for those you love -
for the goodness of the world that needs saving.
And though our memories were cut much too short,
The Light you shared lives on in all of us that knew you.
Your sons carry you in the way they go.
And, oh, how your likeness does shine!

Sister in-law

The Final Inspection

The Police Officer stood and faced God,
Whose time shall always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, you policeman,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
So if you don't, I'll understand."

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the police officer waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, you policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."
