As as an outfitter and biologist, I’ve had the pleasure of interacting with many fine NPS and NFS rangers. Unfortunately, I do not believe Ranger Anderson was one of them, but the excellence of rangers in general and the story of Ranger Anderson’s selfless sacrifice in particular have stayed with me.

This spring, I have the honor to name a new ( baby) pack llama.
Trust me when I tell you that a baby llama can bring a smile to most anyone’s face; they all prancing legs and batting eyelashes. I wish that all here who serve the public in difficult circumstances and/or came here to grieve could spend some time with this Fluffy, white bundle of joy and be comforted. In lieu of that, I hope the thought of her helps.

This llama will spend her days like her namesake did: helping people. She will be, bringing smiles to lots of faces as she bravely works in our public lands with her friends and family.

(Note: I hope those who knew this fine ranger, and especially her family, find this an appropriate tribute. If not, please use the supplied email to lmk and I will find another way to honor her service...)

Every single day when law enforcement personnel put on their uniform they are in danger, no matter where they are. Margret was trying to stop a person who ran a chain-up station, just as all of us have done from time to time at Mount Rainier National Park. Her death points up that being a nice person, as Margret was, does not shield you from those who wish to harm people protecting our freedom.

Margaret you touched many lives. Some of those were lucky to know you. Other were touched by you without ever meeting you. You gave your life for other people that day.saved them at the cost of your own life and future.

Every year at this time I think of you and your family and say a prayer. I was lucky to meet you and work with you at the C&O Canal NHP. You left a lasting impression on me of your professionalism, dedication and compassion. I am better off having known you.

It has been seven years since our beloved daughter, Margaret, was shot and killed in the line of duty saving the lives of over 120 people at Mount Rainer. We are very proud of her service but continue to daily miss her with all our hearts. We see her face and artistic talents in her daughters - her legacy lives on! We thank God for the years we had of Margaret's smile, love, laughter. concern and humor. We were always amazed by her ability to focus on what needed to be done and then determinedly accomplish her goals. Forever in our hearts!

Not a year goes by that I don't pause to reflect upon your passing Margaret. Although our friendship was a scant two years during college at K-State, your impact on me will last a lifetime.
I wept aloud that day for a person I hadn't seen in 15 years, and for all of those that I knew you had touched in your life. Fortunately, we who knew you will always remember that giggle and smile.
