RANGERS RANGE™

Where the wind sweeps through a mountain pass
Where the sunlight casts the shadow of a mesa
Where the rain falls upon rough waters
And snowflakes cover frozen peaks
Rangers Range

Preserving battlefields of sacrifice and blood
Protecting living things which have no voice
At elevation and in all environs
In twilight and early dawn
Rangers Range

In the silence of terrain at night
In the force of a swift current
In the echo of an avalanche
The cry of a victim
Rangers Range

The smell of black on yellow
The glow of fire in the night
The power of water
And heat of flame
Rangers Range

Blue steel in cordovan leather
Gold on grey above green
Flathat level with the land
Forest green blood
Rangers Range

Loyal to the tradition
Service before self
Formed by fitness
Defined by duty
Rangers Range

Eyes along the skyline
Nose to the wind
What you stand for
Who you are

As as an outfitter and biologist, I’ve had the pleasure of interacting with many fine NPS and NFS rangers. Unfortunately, I do not believe Ranger Anderson was one of them, but the excellence of rangers in general and the story of Ranger Anderson’s selfless sacrifice in particular have stayed with me.

This spring, I have the honor to name a new ( baby) pack llama.
Trust me when I tell you that a baby llama can bring a smile to most anyone’s face; they all prancing legs and batting eyelashes. I wish that all here who serve the public in difficult circumstances and/or came here to grieve could spend some time with this Fluffy, white bundle of joy and be comforted. In lieu of that, I hope the thought of her helps.

This llama will spend her days like her namesake did: helping people. She will be, bringing smiles to lots of faces as she bravely works in our public lands with her friends and family.

(Note: I hope those who knew this fine ranger, and especially her family, find this an appropriate tribute. If not, please use the supplied email to lmk and I will find another way to honor her service...)

Every single day when law enforcement personnel put on their uniform they are in danger, no matter where they are. Margret was trying to stop a person who ran a chain-up station, just as all of us have done from time to time at Mount Rainier National Park. Her death points up that being a nice person, as Margret was, does not shield you from those who wish to harm people protecting our freedom.

We will never forget your bravery Margret. I remember this day like it was today . Sadness swept across the Nation through the National Park Service the day you were called home. We love you and miss you.

We all think of you often. Not a New Year passes without reflection of who you were and the senseless taking of your life. It also brings the contemplation of our responsibilities as Rangers. We have the watch from here.

Margaret you touched many lives. Some of those were lucky to know you. Other were touched by you without ever meeting you. You gave your life for other people that day.saved them at the cost of your own life and future.

Every year at this time I think of you and your family and say a prayer. I was lucky to meet you and work with you at the C&O Canal NHP. You left a lasting impression on me of your professionalism, dedication and compassion. I am better off having known you.

It has been seven years since our beloved daughter, Margaret, was shot and killed in the line of duty saving the lives of over 120 people at Mount Rainer. We are very proud of her service but continue to daily miss her with all our hearts. We see her face and artistic talents in her daughters - her legacy lives on! We thank God for the years we had of Margaret's smile, love, laughter. concern and humor. We were always amazed by her ability to focus on what needed to be done and then determinedly accomplish her goals. Forever in our hearts!

John 5:28, 29 - "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out". I pray that everyone can find peace in knowing that we will see this officer as well as many others again in Paradise soon. Until then, please accept my condolences.

Not a year goes by that I don't pause to reflect upon your passing Margaret. Although our friendship was a scant two years during college at K-State, your impact on me will last a lifetime.
I wept aloud that day for a person I hadn't seen in 15 years, and for all of those that I knew you had touched in your life. Fortunately, we who knew you will always remember that giggle and smile.

Rest well.

Another year remembered Margaret. Protect us and your family from above. You are missed and thought of often. I still remember your laugh as we would work the busy weekends at Spruce Run and then have Miller Lites after work. You were always a good friend. ♥️♥️
