My deepest sympathy goes out to his wife Laura and the entire family of Deputy Sheriff Matt Miller and the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

Your day is done,
gone the sun,
From the hills,
from the lake,
From the skies.
All is well,
safely rest,
God is nigh.

Warrior, good night,
but must you go,
When the day,
And the night
Still need you so?
All is well.
We will carry you
to your rest.

Go to sleep,
peaceful sleep,
May the warrior,
God keep,
Safe in sleep.
Fades the light;
And afar
Goes the day,
And the stars
Shine bright,
Fare thee well;
Day has gone,
Night is on.

Thanks and praise,
For our days,
'Neath the sun,
Neath the stars,
'Neath the sky,
As warriors go,
This we know,
God is nigh.

I first met Matt (Sid) when we were juniors or seniors in high school (Lyman-class of 77). We became great friends for many, many years. In fact, Sid was one of six guys in my wedding party that stood up for me when I got married. The list of memories is very, very long. Unfortunately, time and life moved on and we lost touch. Sid was a great, fun loving guy that could always make me laugh. I am proud and thankful to have had time with him. Prayers and thoughts to those who knew and loved him. You’ll be missed Sidney J.!

Matt (Sid), You were a best friend growing up, we had some great times. We experienced boot camp together, we experienced the police acadamy and many more experiences than I can list. Time grew us apart, but you were always thought of. You will be greatly missed, thank you for serving. Thank you for being the person that you were. My prayers go out to your family and friends. Love you man!

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
King James Version (KJV)

13But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

15For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

18Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

To the family and friends of Deputy Matt Miller, his fellow deputies, and most especially to Deputy Miller:

We honor your service to your community as a police officer and you will always be remembered and revered. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of our entire family, I wish to extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Matt was killed in the line of duty. It is obvious he was well-loved by many and well-respected by his peers as reflected in the loving reflections left for him.

May his loved ones continued to be supported by their law enforcement family and other police survivors. Our family grieves with you and for you. To Matt's family, you are in my heart's embrace today.

Each day that a police officer dies in the line of duty is tragic and heart wrenching, but I cannot help but think of the nightmare that changes a home decorated for the holidays and a household who had just celebrated the joy of Christmas to a place of enormous grief and shock.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the years of distinquished service Matt gave to his community and the citizens of Florida, and the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on December 26, 2011

There is a fundamental difference between "The Good Guys" and "The Bad Guys" that most members of society can easily distinguish. Those who count themselves amongst the lawful even go so far as to acknowledge that people who prey on their fellows with little regard for the impact of their actions have no place in a civilized world. Yet few are willing to take a stand against such foes, relying instead on a small segment of their peers to assume these risks for them.

Not unlike Feudal England, which relied on Knights to defend against evil, our society has come to rely on peace officers, who draw a line in the sand, between what is acceptable and what is not.

Deputy Sheriff Matt Miller was one such Knight, who swore an oath decades ago to place his life, his health and even his sanity on that thin blue line, standing in harms way, so that the rest of our nation could sleep in peace, confident in the notion that no ill would befall them.

An oath of that magnitude carries with it a heavy burden, which Matt was willing to shoulder, because he believed in the value of service to ones community, and the honor of sacrifice.

You shall be missed, my friend.

Thank you for drawing a line in the sand.

Seminole County Sheriff's Office

A brother of mine died today. I did not know his name until today. I know only that he died tragically before his time. I know that he died for me and would have done so knowingly had I been by his side today, as I would have died for him. I do know much about him, however, because he is my brother. Not born of the same blood but tied together by a thin blue line that sears its bond no less f...iercely than that of the sanguine fluid that runs through siblings of the same bosom. He knew before today that it could happen, but he chose bravely to continue his calling; it is this undying spirit that makes him my brother. I shall miss him, much as if a piece of me was cut away. The brotherhood has been bruised but the soul lives on in all of the brothers and sisters who continue the quest. He was not alone, and he will continue to live in all of us who will pick up the shield until the end of time. A brother of mine died today. [Reprinted from my FB Page]
