A police officer should be remembered not by how he died, but how he lived! A great man has gone to secure a safe path for the rest of us to follow. Thank you to you, your family and the Virginia Tech Police Department. Rest in Peace Brother.

And yet again, Another day another officer.
Another brother I have never met,
Another family filled with a terrible sadness.
My heart breaks, my eyes fill with tears.

Rest in Peace my brother
You may have gone to the Father
But you will never be forgotten
Yee but for the grace of God go I..

Deriek, it's only been a few hours ago since you were taken from us. I remember that July day back in 2005 when we met. After lunch we went through "hell day" together. From that point forward, our academy class traded a lot of blood, sweat and tears. The back in August, i had the pleasure of riding along on a special assignment with you on night shift! We had a great time!! I also remember a bunch of us getting together from time to time and going for a motorcycle ride on our days off. I'm glad we were able to spend that time together because you are a great person!! Thank you for your service brother! We will all see you soon!! Until then, keep us safe!

Rest in peace Brother...my thoughts are with your family, friends, and the members of the VTPD during this most difficult and tragic time. My granddaughter is a freshman at VT, where we visited her this past Sunday and Monday, and her Dad is a Virginia State Police Officer. This made your loss very personal to our family.

I am saddened by this loss. He spent his life protecting others. My thoughts go out to his wife and 5 children. Kids should not have to grow up without their father. RIP. I am hopeful his friends and comrades will watch over his family.
