Officer Heavey,
On today, the 25th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of the state of New Jersey. There is no tougher job in Law Enforcement than that of a Corrections/Detention Officer. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of this riot. I remember this day every year and the 19th when you died. You were such a gentle soul. The destruction was horrific but the worst was the loss of you.

As a young, troubled youth, I was incarcerated in this facility many years ago. Three of these great men took me under their wing and changed the direction of my life. I still remember their names.

I later became a paramedic, married, and raised 3 children, one of whom is now a federal officer himself.

Know that you change lives. Rest in peace, sir.

Juveniles are treated differently than adults and in many cases this is the right and proper thing to do. Sadly it often seems that the general public has a misconception that if you are a 'juvenile' you're not dangerous. You're just a kid and no kid should be treated like an adult.

If two punches to the head from a juvenile can kill a man, that sort of disproves any notion that a juvenile cannot be dangerous. To compound the tragedy, your killers only served 10 years (IF they served the whole sentence) whereas those who knew and loved you best will serve life sentences, and they're innocent.

For your work and for the risks you took even as a part-timer, you truly are a hero and on this 21st anniversary of your passing, I just want to say thank you, God Bless and may your eternal rest be always peaceful, Brother.

Officer Heavey,
On today, the 19th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of the state of New Jersey. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. There is no tougher job in Law Enforcement than that of a Corrections Officer and it sickens me that the POS's that did this to you only got 10 years for Manslaughter.

Your heroism and service is honored today, and I am priviliged to be the first to post a reflection. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

I pray for solace for all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever.

Rest In Peace
