"The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

RIP Ofc. Morgan, thank you for your service

I was Nk from 1971-1986 and worked with many fine officers, and have remained friends with many. Life is so short and fragile, but this is one of the things we learn as we get older. My prayers are with your family, and rest in peace my brother.

Mike, I can't believe what happened...Just last night Monday morning I was sitting on the desk at the North District when I got the call. I heard the words, but could not truly comprehend what was happening. It all seems like a dream, a horrible dream. I keep hoping that I wake up and none of this ever happened.

I am consoled by the fact that as long as a person is alive in our hearts they are never truly gone. Therefore, you can never be gone as your spirit lives on in perpetuity. You touched so many lives in your time on this earth.

Your final act on this earth was to save another person's life. People will say: heroic, selfless, above and beyond, and so many other superlatives to describe this final act - and they would all be correct. I'll simply say: " That was Mike being Mike!" You see heroes are not defined by how they died, but rather by how they lived. You certainly lived like a hero.

I will miss my friend, but for now rest because God has you!

For Detective Michael Morgan:

The risks that the law officer takes are many and encountering a robbery in progress is always an extremely dangerous situation, especially if among those confronted by one who wields a gun. We regret that our brother Mike would be the latest statistic by a low-life and a robber who guns down others for the sake of theft and taking what belongs to others. We rejoice in the cooperation of fellow law officers making a quick arrest - we will do this in every case, no matter what it takes, always - forever.

We pray for Mike's family, friends, co-workers and all who care about him. May they be ready to reach-out to one another in the days ahead.

We are proud to render a final salute to Detective Michael Morgan, a soldier-of-the-law.

It saddens me to see another name added to this list. My father's tour of duty ended in 1978, and I still come here, over 30 years later, so I won't forget. I salute you "Officer Morgan", and I pray for your family. Very few know the pain and suffering left behind, but we here at this Memorial Page do. God bless all who protect and serve.
