Reflections for Lieutenant Joseph Lawrence Szczerba

I am shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Sergeant Joe Szczerba. Joe was a cop's cop, and one of the best field supervisors I ever had the privilege to work with. Joe lead from the front, was always in the trenches with his team, and never left until the job was done. Joe possessed the warrior mindset - meaning he was always mentally and physically ready to put his life on the line to protect the citizens and his brother and sister officers. I had the honor of promoting Joe to sergeant and the privilege to have worked with Joe and to call him my friend. I offer my sincere condolences to Joe's family and the women and men of the New Castle County Police Department. Joe will be dearly missed by all who know him,

Rick Gregory, Chief of Police
Provo Police Department and Former Chief-New Castle County Police Depa

Saint Michael, heaven's glorious commissioner of police, who once so neatly and successfully cleared God's premises of all its undesirables, look with kindly and professional eyes on your earthly force.

Give us cool heads, stout hearts, and uncanny flair for
investigation and wise judgement.

Make us the terror of burglars, the friend of children and
law-abiding citizens, kind to strangers, polite to bores,
strict with law-breakers and impervious to temptations.

You know, Saint Michael, from your own experiences
with the devil that the police officer's lot on earth is not
always a happy one; but your sense of duty that so
pleased God, your hard knocks that so surprised the
devil, and your angelic self-control give us inspiration.

And when we lay down our night sticks, enroll us in your
heavenly force, where we will be as proud to guard the
throne of God as we have been to guard the city of all
the people. Amen.

RIP SGT Joseph Szczerba

Sarge,

You were a nice man and a true Police Professional. You always took the time to stop in and see one of your fellow officers who was hospitalized with a major health issue. Your sincere care and concern for the well-being of your fellow officers, on and off duty, always shined through.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, your family, and department.

Joe, you were three years ahead of me back at Salesianum High and even then you were a quiet yet effective leader and presence on the football field and in the classroom. You carried those same qualities with you onto the police force and were always highly respected and admired for them. You are now part of one of the most elite police agencies and will forever look out for your brethren from above. God Bless and until we meet again.
