Thank you Officer McCandless for standing between evil and those they would prey upon. Without brave men like you and your fellow officers, evil would triumph. You filled someones shoes when you began your career and now yours are to be filled to continue the good fight. RIP as you stand before your maker and continue your patrol. May God bless & comfort your family & fiance during the following days of this terrible tragedy. You and the two officers with you that day are TRUELY heroes!!

I am so sorry for the family, Ryan's fiancee, all of his fellow workers, friends and the community of Rapid City. I feel gifted that I had the privileged of knowing Ryan as a friend and neighbor while he was growing up. It was evident he was destined for something special in life. He was a unique and special person. He was given a great moral compass by a wonderful family. He was surrounded by great role models, first and foremost his dad, a Midland Michigan Sheriff Department Deputy and later Under Sheriff, now retired. One other person I think deserves credit as an up standing role model that Ryan spent much time with is Midland County Sheriff Deputy (Ret.) Ben Doil. Both I consider to have been great peace officers. Both I am proud to say are my friends. I think Ryan knew early on that he wanted to be a police officer. He excelled at Ferris State University towards that goal and again later gaining a Masters degree in Public Administration. He was a great person and protector of his fellow man. He made the world better. He and his fellow officers are true heroes. I wish his fellow officers a full recovery. Thoughts and prayers for all in this dark time. Thank you to every law enforcement person everywhere. I know where we would be without you.
