Reflections for Police Officer Brent Daniel Long

In the short time that I have served the citizens of Terre Haute, I had the pleasure of getting to know Brent. Whenever he was on duty, he was always there. He always had a great attitude and a smile on his face. He really loved the job and serving the citizens of Terre Haute. He will be greatly missed by not only his immediate family, but his family of fellow officers, firefighters, EMS, dispatchers, and the citizens of Terre Haute. R.I.P. Officer Long and know that even in your passing we will carry on and continue to do the job that you loved so deeply and do what is necessary to provide safety and care for Terre Haute. Godspeed, Brother, you will be missed.

His days always began with a "10-41",
he was always ready to take on more crime.
The same routine for the past six years,
but he got used to it over time.
Day in and day out he gave it
his all and he did his best.
Never stopping to think that this could be
the last time he straps on his bulletproof vest.
Another day passes and once again
he has protected and served.
But never once really getting
the full recognition he deserved.
He had a full life but there was
so much left for him to do.
But on July 11th 2011, "THPD 208" made
his Final "10-42"

I see and read all the appreciation for fallen Officer Long, and we will never forget the sacrifice that he and his family have given to protect us.

I would like to ask everyone to please approach an officer the next time you see one, and TELL THEM HOW MUCH YOU APPRECIATE THE WORK THEY DO. It's amazing how we realize just how much they give for us every day, after they are gone tragically. I know they would love to hear it before a tragedy like this happens. It truly is a thankless job, and all officers need to know that they are respected, appreciated and acknowledged for the devotion they give to protect every citizen.

My condolences to the Long Family, THPD, Indiana State Police, U.S. Marshall's office and everyone else who has been deeply affected by this tragedy. I will not forget!

My heartfelt condolences to the the family of Officer Long who gave his all. We recently went thru this with Cpl James Szuba and his K-9 Ricky in Mishawaka. And Nick Polizotto, Scott Severns, Paul Deguch, and Tom Roberts and Brian Verkler of Mishawak PD. When will it all end. O, Almighty God, whose great power and wisdom embrace the universe. Watch over all police officers everywhere. Protect them from harm in the performance of their duty, to stop crime, robbery and violence. We pray, help them keep or streets and homes safe, day and night. We recommend them to your loving care because their duty is dangerous. Give them strength and courage. Protect these brave police officers. Grant them your almighty protection. Unite them safely with their families after duty has ended.

THE PEACE OF WILD THINGS (by Wendell Berry)

When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

My prayers go to family, friends and colleagues of Officer Long.

Last March myself and my K-9 partner were also shot, both of us were lucky enough to recover. Unfortunately one of my fellow officers was killed in the assault. I would like everyone to know how important it is for your coninued support of Brent and his family. We were lucky to have our community and fellow officers go out of the way to support us, Let's make sure we do the same for Brent's family. There have been too many officer shootings this year. Let's show the "bad guys" out there that it is unaccetable to take our heroes.

My heart and prayers go out for each and every person affected by this tragic event. Nothing can be said or spoken that will make the pain go away, but know that thousands of people are praying in support of you and in remembrance of your wonderful husband/father/family member/co-worker and friend.

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death and though I mark on duty, my calls unknown, I fear no evil, for the majority are with me, nor do I worry of my own safety, all of this I do for the citizens of my community.

Though I have made mistakes, accept me, as I accept you and show me the way …..Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Pride is what you show through self-respect and conduct, Integrity is proven through honest action and character, while Honor is exceptional recognition given to you by another.

Honorable person
Exemplary character
Respected and revered
One of a kind
Exceptional act and/or devotion
Select few

I have no doubt that Terre Haute Police Officer Brent Long displayed ALL of these characteristics throughout his career in service to others as well as being an example of what a true lifelong hero should be.

Rest in Peace Sir as you continue to watch over your brethren and family until you meet again with a kind smile and a loving embrace.

Boone County Sheriff's Office
