To the Kenner and BPD families.....a portion of a letter penned by Abraham Lincoln on November 21, 1864..

"...I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic he died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

Abraham Lincoln"

God bless our police force as you deal with this tragedy and loss, and continue to bravely serve this community every day. We can not pay you enough for the jobs you do and the sacrifices you make. But most importantly, may God bless the Kenner family. The loss of such a heroic man saddens all of us and we can only imagine the heartbreak you are feeling. May your dad/husband rest in peace and may you all find strength to continue his great legacy. We love you Sgt. Kenner and all members of our PD who protects us every day.

I am so saddened by the loss of an officer in our community.

There is a bond within the military community (military members and their families), and this seems to be the case with law enforcement officers and their families. My heart goes out to Officer Kenner's family, friends and fellow officers.

I am grateful for Officer Kenner's service to our community, and to all those who serve our communities, and our country. Bless you all, and thank you.

I've only had the pleasure of working with Sgt Kenner for 15 months but I remember he was always there for me to answer any questions that I had when his shift came on after ours.

I can remember Sarge stopping me while I cruised main and was always fair with me. He always had a joke for us while I was in training during a class that he taught. Sarge even stopped and picked up my debit card at a restaurant that I forget to get back after a night shift. He was always there for anyone in need.

Sgt., God speed, my brother. We will take it from here.

RIP, Your family is in my prayers and thoughts.

A heartfelt sympathy to Sgt Kenner's family. There are no words that can make this easier. You are in my prayers. I would also like to offer sympathy to Sgt Kenner's co-workers. Your's is a thankless job that at times goes unappreciated by many. Sadly when tradgedy comes it reminds us that your job is not an easy one, nor always a safe one. Thank you for ALL you do and the sacrifices you make. Rest in peace Sgt Kenner, your tour of duty is over.

If tears could build a stairwell and memories were a lane, I would walk right up to Heaven and bring you home again. No farewell words were spoken, no time to say goodbye...you were gone before we knew it, and only God knows why. Our hearts still ache in sadness, and secret tears still flow, what it means to lose you, no one will ever know. Rest in peace Steve, rest in peace.

Although we didn't work together that long before I left the department, it was long enough to see what a "huge" asset you would become to the BPD in your career. I remember riding with you one evening enroute to an injury accident, and I asked you to slow down a little, as I thought the patrol car was traveling too fast. Your response was "but someone is injured and needs our help". Your overriding concern was to offer aid to the injured as quickly as possible, and your comment demonstrated the philosophy that made you so successful at Serving and Protecting the citizens of Bismarck. Your imposing size wasn't used so much for intimidating as it was for reassuring. "Things will be OK, I'm here now".

I was so so fortunate to be able to know you as a good friend and neighbor. My heart goes out to Deb and the kids, as well as the entire BPD "family", who have all suffered an enormous loss. Rest In Peace, Steve, you've left the city in good hands.

To the best sergeant I ever had! People have asked me about you these last three days. I describe you as the consummate professional, extremely knowledgeable, dedicated, and caring. A true cop's cop. Your foresight in wanting to make BPD a better agency and us as officers better was incredible and much appreciated. You were the best of the best. The citizens of Bismarck rallied around us after 9-11 and I pray they do the same all over again. It meant a lot to me when you were at the airport when I returned from Iraq. My thoughts are with Deb and your children and I pray that they find comfort in all these reflections that truly show what a great officer and human being your were. What a legacy you left Steve and you will be incredibly missed.

Steve was my Sgt while I worked for the BPD. He was not only my supervisor, but my mentor and my friend. He was a great man who was always willing to help. He was always smilling and had an encouraging word. He could find a DUI like no one else I have ever met and if you had a traffic question he was the man to talk to.

He was a man of honor, integrity and truely cared about people, his job, and doing the right thing. I was barely 21 when I started and had a lot to learn, Sarge was always willing to answer any of my questions without hesitation and he looked out for all of us on shift.

Those on my old shift may remember him giving me grief about how changed my diaper back when my father was his FTO. I remember him sharing his dream of getting a fancy RV when he retired, him stopping by to check on me after he won in the battle of our cars, and meeting for cappucinos on those cold slow winter nights in Bismarck when no one was out but law enforcement!

He had a big heart, would do anything for anyone, and always had our backs. I could not have asked for a better Sgt or person to look up to. He helped shape who I was as a person and an officer, for that I cannot thank him enough.

To Deb and family, I cannot imagine what you are feeling right now. He was a great man and didn't deserve this. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed.

As I write this tears fill my eyes at the loss of such a great man. You will be missed, remembered, and loved by many for many reasons but for me you were a friend, a mentor, and a hero. I will never forget you.
