Charles, Josh and I attended the Alvin Police Academy in 2006. We went on separate LEO carrers but remained as close as we could over the last 5 years. You were a great friend and a amazing Deputy. You will not be forgotten my friend.

Well sweetie I miss you to pieces! My heart broke into a million pieces and I'm still trying to put them back together. I'll never forget you and Woody teasing me about secretly seeing James for so long for over an hour, your spazzy dances, great humor, and cheering me up when I was down. I wish I could have worked on the same shift longer but I cherish every memory I have of you. You were an outstanding Deputy and friend. We love and miss you and I pray for all the strength in the world for your family. Now rest peacefully and watch over your brothers and sisters on the streets.

I came to know Deputy Charles VanMeter at the start of his law enforcement career. Deputy VanMeter came to the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office and started his duties by working in the jail; I was his Jail Lt. The first day on the job Deputy VanMeter spoke with me about his personal expectations. Deputy VanMeter stated that he wanted all that law enforcement had to offer. During his journey, Deputy VanMeter sometimes had setbacks. As he began to grow in knowledge his expectations begin to develop. Deputy VanMeter gave his life by doing his law enforcement duties: “protect & serve”.

Deputy Charles VanMeter you now look down from heaven with no expectation being higher than being with God. You will be missed….God Bless

We had many good times together bro. I remember when I lived in Cobblestone, we used to hang out and sometimes you'd come over for dinner. I'll miss those days but I will never forget them. You were an outstanding Deputy and a good friend. I recalled a time Tina told me about one night you were at her job eating and having a drink, when Norton's was around in Pearland. She called you a "Real Boyscout". She had scrapped her knee on a table or something while at work, she told you about it, then you left immediately to your truck to retieve a band-aid. When you returned you also brought an alcohol swab, lol. You wiped the injury then Tina said, "it burns". You blew on it to cool down the burn as a parent would do for a child. LOL, she still laughs about it today. We all have good memories of you brother. One I can't forget is when you would call me "Mariposa"(butterfly), and that I would call you "Nena"(Babe/chick). Those were funny nicknames we gave eachother. Everyone would always ask what are you two talking about? We both told 'em to learn spanish! I know you are in a better place now and watching over everyone. We'll meet up some day and catch up on everything man. Good bye for now Amigo!!!

Chaz ... he'hem - Charles...you taught me a lot about living, and now you're showing me how to die. I miss you greatly, and my heart is so heavy, it's unbearable at times, but I smile through it, and you showed me that. Enjoyed playing wingman together, laughing and smiling, and living... My thoughts are with your sister, she lost her protector, and her close best friend. Prayers to your family, and BCSO.

Deputy Charles VanMeter came to Brazoria County Sheriff's Office patrol division thinking he knew everything about being a peace officer. At times, this notion got him in trouble, but Charles was a dedicated young man whose dream was to be a Texas Peace Officer and in particular, for the Brazoria Sheriff's Office. He never gave up on his dream and he never quit trying to be the best. I watched as he matured into a very able patrol deputy. Charles had a quick wit and a ready smile, which will be missed by all who knew him. My wife and I wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to his family and we want you to know Charles will always be remembered by those he served with.

You came to work for me in jail in 2005, and we had some rough times, but after our many talks you came to me and asked what it would take to do this job the way people expected. From that time forward you made every effort to learn and work at becoming the best deputy possible. You became one of the best deputies on my shift and when you left for patrol, I knew that we where loosing a terrific hand, but knew that patrol was gaining an exceptional person and deputy. I asked about you often, and found that every time I asked, there was nothing but great things being said about you. I am so proud of the man you became and I will miss you dearly. You where taken from us way too soon, but I guess god had other plans. Our hearts are heavy, but we know you are in a better place. Make sure to keep everyone in Heaven on there toes as only you can do. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family. Watch out for all the brave men and women that protect the citizens around the world. It takes a special person to do this job and you where the epitome of that.
