I'd respectfully wish to offer my condolences to the Maryland State Police, as well as to the friends and family of Trooper Hunter.

While I never had the opportunity to know Trooper Hunter in person, we had many mutual friends. They have spoken volumes as to what a great cop and and what a great man he was.

My heart goes out to the entire MSP family. I truly feel your loss.

Maryland State Trooper First Class Shaft Hunter and I met in 1998 as Lieutenants in our beloved Corps. We were introduced through a mutual friend, and upon our initial introduction, Shaft embraced me and accepted me as if he had known me for years. Although, we lost touch some years back, reading some of the wonderful reflections brought a smile to my face that the years cannot and will not erase. Simply stated, these reflections reinforced what my initial perception was 13 years ago...I met a good, daggone man!

I appreciate you my comrade for living a life of purpose, conviction, kindness, and honor. May you rest in eternal peace and may God provide your family, friends, and loved one's comfort, understanding, and the strongest of shoulders to rest on when our hearts get weary.

To the family of Shaft, He was my platoon guide 2061 at Parris Island South Carolina. Our journey started together as young Marine recruits on December 6th 1994 He was a great leader and always on que. He made a huge impact on a lot of people and will be missed by all. There is a section of our Marine Corps Hymn that states, If the Army and the Navy ever look on Heaven's scenes, They will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines. I feel this is a true statment and I am sure that he will do an outstanding job up there as he did here. Rest easy knowing that Shaft is guarding the streets of Heaven. I offer my condolances to everyone's life that he touched . God bless and Semper Fi (Always Faithfull) Lance A Whitmore Sgt USMC 1994-1998

In times like this, it's very hard to find the words to express the gratitude for ones life. Trooper Hunter exemplified what many of our soldiers and public servants do daily, which is a selfless heart to duty and service to our country and community. Thank you for serving your country and protecting us Trooper Hunter. Your efforts were not in vane. My God to Bless your family and be a comfort to them in their time of need. To be apart from the body, is to be with the Lord. May you REST IN PEACE!

I worked in the same county as Shaft a few years back. He had one of a few K9's in that county at the time. While we didn't keep in touch after I left the area, I would often tell stories of him and his dog Bear - as recently as two weeks ago.

Shaft was the type of Trooper that you wanted to hear coming to back you up...he'd always arrive with a smile on his face and was more than happy to help. I can say with certainty that anyone who had the opportunity to work with him is a better Police Officer because of it.

Words cannot describe how big of a loss this is....it's never easy losing a brother in blue, but this one is a particularly hard pill to swallow.
