Reflections for Trooper First Class Shaft Sidney Hunter

Your heroism and service is honored today, the first anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace. Thanks to your friends for sharing their memories and devotion to you through their reflections.

Rest In Peace.

Trooper Hunter, I had the honor to ride for you with Law Enforcement United this year. I met your parents and son this afternoon and gave them my deepest condolences on the loss of their son and father. I gave the flag from my bike and bracelet to your mother and gave department patches, stickers and thin blue line bracelet to your son for all your children. And while I know that those items have little intrinsic value, I hope that they serve as a reminder to your family that your sacrifice will never be forgotten by those of us still on watch.

Rest in Peace Trooper Hunter, thank you for your sacrifice

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiance Dennis. Every time I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the officer they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Trooper Hunter. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. (The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. I can also be found on Face Book.) You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Shaft, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Shaft's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Shaft's life was about so much more than the way he died. Shaft will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Trooper Hunter, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiance Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been eight & a half years and he's still very much missed and forever loved.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

My husband worked with Shaft Hunter for years. The news of his death was very upsetting to my husband. He reflected on all the work they did alongside each other, all the laughs and how much of a great guy Hunter was.
We pray for his family and close friends. I continually pray for the protection of law enforcement officers. These men and women deserve without a doubt our respect and honor. The officers and spouses (or supporting relationships to the L.E.O.) all need support, that is also a continual prayer of mine. God bless each and everyone of you.
THANK YOU for your service Hunter.

I met Tpr Hunter at Courthouse Bay on Camp Lejeune, he was a Lt in Bravo Company and I was a Ssgt in Charlie Company. I can remember us talking about the state police back in 98 and 99, im not sure when he got out of the Corps but he said he was going to be a Maryland State Trooper and I told him I was going to be Trooper up in Kentucky. I was looking at ODMP tonight and saw his picture and I knew that Hunter was the person I knew from Camp Lejeune. This is very sad to lose a Marine and Trooper, God bless his family and the Maryland State Police. He was a great person that I can remember. I find it very hard to write about Lt Shaft Hunter. It is not because there is nothing to say but it is because there is so much to say. As a New Marine in the Fleet he was an outstanding leader he showed me that being a Marine was not just putting on theuniform but it was about be a man. I know that the world is at a great lost without him. I know that his family and freinds are overwhelmed with greif. But I hope that this story will carry you through your worries and sadness as it has me thanks to Shaft. Lt Hunter and I along with the rest of his platoon were sent to Bridgeport CA for mountain training. It was a very cold and raining day in the middle of October in the heart of the serria nevada mountains. Lt Hunter was tasked to take HIS Marines up a Mountain named 94,94. It was named that because it was 9,494 ft straight up. The other platoons were set off to climb this mountain at the same time also. The trainers that were there told us that it would be eaiser to traverse this mountain going from side to side. Lt Hunter said to hell with that we are going to be first to reach the top. As we set out to climb this mountain I remember thinking that he had lost his mind. After what felt like forever we finaly reached the top. Cold wet and extremly tired looking out at the serria nevada mountains I was struck by how beautiful a veiw it was. Lt Hunter walked over to me and said something to us that has last my 14 years in the Marine Corps. He said " Don't ever worry about how bad you have it right now. The mountain that you just climbed lead to to where you are now. I learned two very important lessons from him first to take your challenges head on and insure that you come out on top. The second is persistance, that life may very bad at times but when the bad times are over there is always something good and often breath taking to enjoy

My love and thoughts to the family and freinds of this great man,

To you Sir, YAT-YAS, Semper Fi

I remember Coach Shaft from hurricanes. He was such a good and nice person, always made you smile and laugh! I remember a summer when I was at six flags and my mom came to pick me up and we were talking to him for a little then this big fight broke up, he got it under control then he said bye. He was such a good person, and good at his job. He spent many hours making us safe. I know he really loved his kids and he was a very good coach. I was so sad when I found out he had died, I couldnt understand why such a good person who loved his kids had to die, but god does everything for a reason so maybe he needed a trooper in heaven. Rest in Peace coach shaft <3 you and your family has been on my mind for the past couple days, I am praying for you all.
