Shaft,
I will remember this day forever. I got the phone call at 4:45 am waking me up telling me a trooper had died in a crash and I needed to come to work. When I asked who it was the duty officer said Trooper Shaft Hunter. I felt sick to my stomach. I thought "I know him and we went through 6 months of misery together."
Since day 1 in our academy it was obvious you were a true leader. You took control and motivated of our class and became our class president. We all had great times and bad times together. That is where I learned the word "devil dog" and I can still hear that "Marine Corp Bark" you used to let out all the time.
One of the many stories I remember is you getting your clock cleaned when you were boxing Fornoff. Later, you walked out the instrctor door in the classroom when Wiz wanted to see you. I remember saying if Shaft walked out the instructor door something definetely is wrong with him since you were so squared away. That was confirmed when you went to the hospital and found out you had a concussion.
It's crazy to think I will never see or talk to you again. I will miss seeing and talking to you at the State House. It's an honor for me to have known you and call you a friend. My thoughts and prayers go out to the rest of your friends and family.
Rest in peace and thanks for your service.

To my K9 brother. Shaft, you were a wonderful person and officer to work beside. We had a lot of good and memorable times. A lot of laughs were shared during the time you worked in Barrack G. Your smile, personality, and work ethic were addictive. You will be missed more than you will ever know. Thank you for always having my back when I needed you. Your family, friends, and coworkers will be in my thoughts and prayers. You were one of a kind, and no one wil ever take your place.

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
