Reflections for Correctional Officer Ronald E. "RJ" Johnson

To Officer Johnson's family and the staff of SDP. I volunteered at this prison for 8 years and can say that the CO's truly protect our community. Thank you for all you do each day. May your family know that many of us do care and appreciate your work. I remember Officer Johnson not only as a kind man but one who was fair. I am sorry for everyones loss.

With a heavy heart, I express my deepest sympathies to CO Johnson's family. Know that we, his extended CO family here in all South Dakota prisons, are grieving deeply for his tragic loss. We know the sacrifice and the daily grind first hand that RJ made for 23 courageous years. Shocked and saddened at the loss of such a great man, who is now even being recognized by former inmates as "a good, fair, honorable" man, we are inspired by his heroism. Rest in peace, RJ. And thank you to all brother/sister law officers who have sent their condolences within the state and across the country. It gives us strength during this tough time.

God didn’t promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, sun without rain; but He did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears and light for the way.

Rest in peace.

"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank
God that such men lived." -- Gen. George S. Patton Jr.

On behalf of Morning Watch MDC Los Angeles we offer our most sincere condolence to Mr. Johnsons family and his co workers.

Myself and my responders were also faced with a similar situation in 2003 and we were prepared for violence as we encountered our subjects however they smartly did not resist.

The threat is always real within these walls, some dont want to be here, and they will do anything to facilitate a compromise in security or attempt to take our lives in their attempt.

My husband and I wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Correctional Officer Ronald E. Johnson. It is truly a sad thing that he was murdered for doing his job. If he had worked there for 23 years he must have been very good at is job. It is a tragedy that the family will carry with them forever. But they can also feel blessed for having him in their lives. Again, our sympathy and compassion for the family.
