Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Robert Leo Britton, Jr.

You know the world is small. While working at East Texas Medical Center Hospital in Tyler doing security and dealing with psychiatric patients on a daily basis with Robert, I learned that our friendship actually went back farther than we both ever thought. While sitting on a couple suicidal subjects, myself and Robert were chatting. I asked Robert how long he had been at Smith County and he told me many years. I then asked how long he had been on the streets and he commented that he used to be in dispatch. That was when we both realized that in the late 1990's that while he was a dispatcher at Smith County, I was a dispatcher at East Texas EMS. We sat for a couple hours and re-lived the memories of the old days of dispatch. We discussed all the co-workers he worked with and how most of us still communicate some and some of the calls we could remember from back then. It was awesome for our paths to cross again. It was nothing for Robert to call or we would talk on the computers to see how each others nights were going while on patrol. Just hours before his injury, I was walking a suicidal subject out of the hospital and seen Robert come in. We chatted for a couple minutes and the last words to each other's mouths were "be safe out there, hollar if you need something." I will truely miss the times of working at the ER and hearing all the jokes he could tell. I don't think I have ever heard him tell the same joke twice. Robert will be truely missed. Robert was knowledable and could calm down the most irrate person by his cool, calm, and sweet demeanor and personality. I have heard many people say that Deputy is so sweet. Robert will not only be missed by the Law Enforcement Officers he worked with and those he had contact with, but he will be missed by the citizens of Smith County he served. Robert may you soar like an Angel, cause one day we will meet again my friend.

Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office
