I turn 24 in a few weeks and stories like this hit really hard to me. It's sad to think that this man had to die for some retard wanting to sell drugs. I hope they hang the man that did this for the world to see.

As time came closer to the passing of a year since you've left us, all I could think about was how brave a young man has to be to take a position like yours in law enforcement... Your heroism and service is honored today, the first anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect and your memory will always be honored and revered. I pray for solace for all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace. Rest In Peace

My reflections sorrow for the family, the force, & his friends. I repeat Mr, Kotke's post. You were a hero and we are grateful you chose to serve.
Police in all positions help keep us all safe. You deserve combat pay and I'm always relieved when I meet a retired officer. They made it through alive & I thank them, when I can.
Another reflection is dismay & rage that this happened. I must remember, though, we weren't promised a walk in the park on this earth.

Derek, although I never had the honor to meet you, I have learned so many great things about the amazing person, friend, son, brother and marshal you are through your many family and friends. Next week marks the anniversary of you being taken from this earth so tragically. And as I reflect on this, I remember the many times when I too entered a residence after someone, and how so easily it could have ended differently for me.

You went into that house because it was what we were paid to do. Because we had to be there for our partners and other officers. Because someone needed to be taken off the street. Because it was what we loved doing!

We never met personally, and yet, I know you as a brother. A brother whose kinship was sharing the same type of job, and facing the same dangers. A brother "worthy of going through a door with".

Rest in Peace my brother.

Recently I made a decision to be involved and around other people who are involved with cocaine. A friend of mine recommended I read these reflections as a way of seeing the other side of the drug issue. In the past I have recreationally used drugs and failed to see just how it impacted others. Not just those around me but also those in the community and those who serve the community. In reading all of these reflections I have been gravely reminded that the war on drugs has a permanent impact on the men and women who fight to keep our children and neighborhoods safe as well as their families and friends. One woman mentioned that we need to have better education for children about drugs. I would add we also need to show our children how far reaching these decisions can be. May others learn the way I have over the last few days. I extend my deepest apologies and condolences to Deputy Marshal Hotsingpillers family and fiance for a son, a friend, a lover taken too soon. And a huge thank you to the police forces across our nation who continue his work.

Dustin, I just learned of your loss through the Fly Rod Chronicles show. What an amazing trip. What a way to honor the memory of your brother! I inherited my father's fly fishing tackle, I think of him every time I pick up a fishing rod. When you caught a trout on your brother's rod it brought tears to my eyes.

To the family and friends of Deputy Hotsinpiller, his fellow deputies , and most especially to Derek:

We honor your service to your community as a law enforcement officer and you will always be remembered and revered. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of our entire family, I wish to extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Derek was killed in the line of duty. It is obvious he was well-loved by many and well-respected by his peers as reflected in the loving reflections left for him.

May his loved ones continued to be supported by their law enforcement family and other police survivors. Our family grieves with you and for you. To Derek's family , you are in my heart's embrace today. I share your mother's anquish in losing a beloved child which surely has to be life's greatest sorrow. I thank DUSM Hotsinpiller for his bravery and sacrifice. Being in L.E. and having a family member who is a DUSM, I truly appreciate his service.
