While on my way to float the Jefferson river the other day I drove down the DeLaittre Memorial Highway for the first time. Made me think about how it is not fare that your life was taken so soon. I think about you and your family often and know you are watching over everyone.

It has been a year since you were taken from us and the pain of that day has not lessened. You will forever remain in our hearts as we go through the process of healing from our loss. God Bless you, David, for the man you were and the angel you have become.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the first anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

I pray for the solace of those who love and miss you. Both the pain and pride are forever. Losing a child surely is life's greatest sorrow. Rest In Peace

I walked alone aside the road
To face life’s troubles ahead
Where it might take me and where I’d end up
Served to fill my mind with dread

As the cold winds howled, and lesser men cowled
And the darkness of night did spread
I thought to myself, ‘what sort of man with any sane plan
Wouldn’t rather be safe home in bed?’

As the narrow light thinned, and the chill of the wind
Grew to cut right through to the bone
I looked for a friend, ahead ‘round the bend
Who might help find me safe passage home

But where would I find them, and why would I think
That such a friend exists, or be known
For I know that they do, and, yes, you do too
And they’re only as far as the phone

They sacrifice much, and ask for so little
That we take them for granted each day
They’re there when we need them though some who exceed them
Find a lighter poke holding less pay.

They see the things that Nature brings
And the foibles and missteps of man
They’re the first on the scene and that frequently means
Precious life’s often held in their hand

We’ve lost one now
Through the callous act of a mad man gone awry
Tough is the loss and high is the cost
Paid eternally as years roll on by

So you’ll forgive us who feel the void in our hearts
as Officer DeLaittre is laid to rest
Like his father before him, the honor to serve
Moved him to always give us his best

But what do we do, what can we say, what difference can we offer up
Only to move those who foolishly find all law enforcement corrupt
To understanding their wrong, their feelings misplaced, their view jaded and way off the track
For we’d gladly give all and more of ourselves if we only could have dear David back

Now we each walk alone aside the road
And face our life’s troubles ahead
But our fear’s been replaced by a man in God’s grace
Who we’d rather have with us instead

As the cold winds howl, and lesser men cowl
But a light in the darkness has shown
No fear exists as the Light ‘round the bend is held by a friend
Who will help find us safe passage home

I was working on a crash report the night you were taken from us. I remember feeling ill because it was so close to home for me. I go to Missoula all the time for vacation and weekends and it just hit me like a train when I saw the news about you. Brother, you will never be forgotten. When I work up US HWY 12 towards Montana, I think of you for some reason. I can't explain it. I often think about you. Again, I don't know why. I've never met you but we are connected because of the lives we chose. I will remember you always and I have already told my sons about you. Rest now...your brothers and sisters will uphold your honor and memory the best we know how.

Trooper David DeLaittre is a trooper I have known since he was a baby and his Dad was on the Patrol. It was so nice to see the young man he became as he successfully completed the selection process and was sworn in as a Trooper.

David was always a friendly face and would stop to say hi each time he was in Headquarters. He stopped by my office the day before he died. During that conversation, I asked how he liked his job as a Trooper. With his brown eyes, freckled nose, and great smile, he simply said, “I love it and love working Highway 287.” I certainly treasure that visit.

To his family and friends, may you always feel God’s loving arms around you and providing strength for each day.

David will always be remembered.

Blessed be the memory of Trooper David J. DeLaittre.

Dave,
It was great getting to know you. Supper at Rosa's was great as I could see your enthusiasm for the job and thought how I was as a young officer. I got hit in a shooting on Monday here in Livingston and you would be proud of your fellow troopers the way the responded to help. I wish I could have gotten to know you better and yes one day you and I will patrol together again. Your in my thoughts everyday.

See ya in the future,

Tom
