Reflections for Trooper David James DeLaittre

To Remember the Fallen

to remember the fallen
is not to remember how they fell
but to remember why and for what

to remember the fallen
is not only to remember their actions
but to remember the dream for which they fought

to remember the fallen
is not to remember how they fought
but to remember who they fought for

to remember the fallen
is to remember their reason
to remember their dreams
and to remember those they fought to save

to remember the fallen
we continue their fight
we carry their dreams
and we finish what they start

Rest in peace my borther. Thank you for all you have done to make our world a little better. Thank you for your sacrifice but I am very sad you had to make the ultimate sacrifice. I will never understand mankind or the evil that surrounds us. It takes a special person to serve as a Police officer. We are over worked, underpaid, and underappreciated.

My condolences to your family. I will pray for them. I pray that god will give them peace and comfort in this very difficult time. Walk the streets of gold for you have earned it. Your parents must be really proud. You are a hero.

God bless.

As a mother of an officer down in 2010, I offer my deepest condolences to his mother and father. There is a sense of wanting to protect your children, though adult, from life's evil. In the case of a police officer son, he is out there to protect us and then evil steps in.

Your son died a hero. I understand your pain, your questions, your fears, and your thoughts. May God comfort you as only he can.

I will look for you in Washington DC in May 2011. The hug I give you then, personally, will be from one who knows what you are going through.

I was the dispatcher on-duty in neighboring Jefferson County, which assisted in the manhunt. My heart and prayers go out to the family, all of the responders, and especially to the MHP and GCSO dispatchers. Our worst nightmare happened yesterday. I won't say what I think of the assailant as this is to remember 269. But I will say that I know that MHP and Trooper DeLaittre's little sisters have another guardian angel in Heaven.

His Judgment Day:
The officer stood and faced his God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shinning, Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Officer, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek To my church have you been true?"
The officer squared his shoulder and said, "No, Lord, I guess I aint, Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was rough, And sometimes I've been violent Because the streets are tough.
But I never took a penny That wasn't mine to keep.. Though I worked a lot of overtime, when the bills got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept an unmanly tear.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't...I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne, where the saints often trod. As the officer waited quietly for the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, Officer. You've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell"

For Trooper David J. DeLaittre:

Our duty is plagued by those who will gun down a law officer by surprise. Our best protection is training though it merely reduces, rather than eliminates, the threat. We regret that our brother David would become such a statistic. The killer fled and then took his own life. Such is the act of cowards.

We pray for David's family, friends, co-workers and all who care about him. May they be ready to reach-out to one another in the days ahead.

I am proud to render a final salute to Trooper David J. DeLaittre, a soldier of the law, who still stands tall among us.
