Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Mark Alan Longway

To the Longway family, friends and coworkers you are all in my heart and prayers during this very difficult time. There are no words to ease the pain in all of your hearts. God has called another HERO home to patrol the streets above.

Our Greatest Fear

Yet once again the Thin Blue Line is diminished,
an officer’s final tour of duty is finished.
"Officer down", it’s our greatest fear,
and once again, I hold back a tear.
They patrol in the state, city, county and town,
in uniforms colored white, green, blue and brown.
The shape of their badges may vary,
but it’s a symbol that they all, proudly carry.
They leave for work with a kiss goodbye,
but some don’t come home, no matter how hard they try.
To uphold the law is the job that they pick,
with such high aspirations, why must some die so quick?
They leave behind loved ones, family and friends,
after their lives have met tragic ends.
Some die in crashes, others hearts not too stout,
to many have been lost when gunshots ring out.
Our Heavenly Father has called them home,
no more these dark streets do they roam.
Through trial and error they have given their best,
please Lord, now grant them eternal rest.
Yet once again the Thin Blue Line is diminished,
an officer’s final tour of duty is finished.
"Officer down", it’s our greatest fear,
and once again I hold back a tear.

Mark and I served together in the Air Force...I hadn't talked to him in years.....Last Sunday he called me out of the blue and he left me a voice mail ......"we need to re-connect brother its been to long"..."call me back" ...."be safe"......I didnt get a chance to return that call....I'll regret that for the rest of my life, and will NEVER let that happen again.....I remember alot of sitting around the dorms and just talking but most of all, Mark and I laughed .........Rest in Peace brother.....I'll miss you...Jack Tipold

Mark,

I still remember many of the lengthy conversations we shared during our 12 hour evening shifts. I could not get you to stop talking no matter how hard I would try, you always had something to say.

When you were assigned to me for your 2nd phase of FTO you knew that I was a new father of a baby girl and being an experienced father yourself of two beautiful daughters you gave me some advice that I will never forget. You told me I should often take her out on date nights (movies, dinner, shopping, etc.), but most important I need to take her go-carting. You were definately right about the go-carting, I don't think that she or I could have laughed any harder. We are planning our next go-cart adventure real soon.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.

It has truly been an honor to have known and served with you. Rest in peace Brother......
