For Deputy Sheriff Mark A. Longway:

Our duty as law officers takes us into one of the most dangerous battlefields - a United States highway. We regret that our brother Mark, despite our training and our exercising of alertness and caution, would become the next statistic among us. Sadly, another soldier-of-the-law has been taken from among us because fate has deemed it to be so.

We pray for Mark's family, friends, co-workers and all who care about him. May they be ready to reach-out to one another in the days ahead.

As a retired state trooper and retired Lake County (FL) deputy sheriff, I am proud to render Deputy Mark Longway a final salute.

Cpl. Ralph D. Fiorenza (Ret.)
Pennsylvania State Police

Connie, Laura and girls - I am so sorry to hear about Mark. I know only too well the pain of having a loved one ripped out of your life without a moment's notice. My nephew Robert considered Mark one of his dearest and most long-time friends, and he shares your grief. We had so much fun with you and Mark at Robert and Sandy's wedding in Key West and last year at Cellini's when Robert and David were in town. I pray for your strength and comfort.

Dear Mrs. Longway and family,

My heart breaks for your loss. I too experienced this loss on January 14 of this year. Words can never truly express the loss felt when you lose your husband, father, son, and friend unexpectedly. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. I truly know and understand that you are at an extreme loss that is indescribable.

Deputy Longway - rest in peace and know that your brothers and sisters of law enforcement will continue to help take care of your family. Thank you for your years of service. You will never be forgotten.

You remain in our prayers,

Tampa is my home. My daughter called me first thing this morning with the tragic news. I want the family of this hero to know hearts weep all over America for you today.
We have no police officers in our family but we truly appreciate the sacrifices made by all officers across the country. My heart breaks everytime there is an officer down, but when it is an HCSO officer, I am especially sad. My sincere condolences to his family and fellow officers.
And this is way too soon after the 2 TPD officers! I am so very sorry.
