Today marks the 5th anniversary of your tragic passing. You previously served with the Nash County Sheriff's Office and before you could truly make a difference with the State, your life ended. It's tragic and such a sad waste of what could have been a lengthy career.

Your name caught my eye. On this date in 1920, a New York Central Railroad Detective died in the line of duty. His name was also Barnes. I don't believe there was a family connection, but it did make me do a double take.

Two Barnes families mourning on the same date, years apart is a sad coincidence.

God Bless you, Brother and may you rest be eternally peaceful.

While I never had the pleasure of meeting you, I know our agency will be a lesser place without you. You were well liked and respected by your academy classmates. I thank you for your service to your fellow man. I've heard only great things about you and regret never having had the chance to get to know you. I pray for God's mercy and grace for your family, friends, loved ones, and fellow inspectors at this time. Rest in peace, brothers forever.

I had the pleasure of meeting and instructing Inspector Barnes at the Basic Inspector School in Edneyville, NC. He had a very pleasing personality and a contagious smile, which seemed to always be on display. He seemed to be a very dedicated father and brother law enforcement officer. He will be missed and never forgotten! To the family, you will continue to be in mine and my family's prayers.
