My condolences to the entire Taylor Police Department. I retired from the neighboring Westland Police Dept. and know many current and former Taylor officers, having played for their police softball team.

I hope every breathing soul in the department as well as the family of Corporal Edwards can somehow get through this tragic event.

Godspeed

I am not only a fellow police officer, but I am a family member of Corporal Matthew Edwards. Although I grew up across the country from Matthew and never really got a chance to know him, I can feel his loss. I feel it through the sadness and grieving that my family is going through. I also feel it as a fellow police officer.

I will never understand how a person, who most likely has called the police sometime in his life for help, could decide to take a cop's life.

I wish I could have known Matthew better in my life. I am told by my family how much of a loving and caring guy Matthew was.

Please citizens help and support the police and their families as much as you can. We keep you safe and sound and are there for you in your times of need. Please be there for us in ours. Corporal Matthew Edwards is a hero.

The policeman stood and faced his God,which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman. How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?
The policeman squared his shoulders and said.
"No, I guess I ain't because those of us who carry a badge can't always be a Saint."
I've had to work most Sundays
and at times my talk is rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep...
though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got to steep.
And I never passed a cry for help
though at times I shook with fear,
and sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.
They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much, but if you don't...I'll understand"
There was a silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly for the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman.
You've borne you burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets.
You've done your time in Hell"

Matt,

As I watch the news this morning it was if time had came to a screaching halt, I have lived in Taylor for 10 years and have always felt like this stuff doesnt happen here. Having worked for a department for quite some time this is something that every officer fears. You are one hell of an officer, thank you for keeping us safe. As we continue here on this earth watch over us.

Always grateful
