Reflections for Officer Thomas Philip Coleman

tom im going to miss training with you on the mat

I knew Tom for the past several months at Musubi Dojo where he trained with dedication in his pursuit of Aikido a Martial Art. Tom has gracious on and off the mat. He was always helpful to do even the smallest thing such as sweep the mat or be helpful with beginning students. He was so excited to learn new movements in Aikido. I am so grateful to have been able to teach and train with him.

I could tell that he was a dedicated father as he often spoke of having to leave in time to tuck his children to bed. He was looking for forward to his first test in Aikido June 21.

I last spoke with him on Wed June 9th. One of the last things he said to me was how he was concerned for the CHP Officer who was in an accident a few days prior.

My prayers go out to your wife, children, mother and sister. My God's Peace be with you.

God's Peace, Tom

I saw the picture in our papers today of Officer Coleman covered with the flag surrounded by other Officers and it brought back all memories of my son being carried out draped in a flag with lines of firemen and law enforcement saluting him . my thoughts prayers and sympathy go out to his family ...particularly his Mom as I have walked in your shoes and know how hard it is to lose your child. The days, months and year ahead will be hard for all of you . Just know that God has a special place up there for all our fallen heroes, and his beautiful smile will be watching over you all . My Jim had a smile like that too.
maybe somehow they are together.

You chose a most honorable profession and to be part of a tight-knit CHP family. Rest assured your CHP family will be there for your wife and children. You did not swerve from the path of danger...I thank you for the ultimate sacrifice that made for all of the citizens of this state. My prayers go out to your wife and children and all of your CHP family. God bless you, those that went before you, and those that remain.

In the court yard of the CHP academy is a memorial fountain for fallen CHP Officers with little brass name plates. Inscribed on them are the names, badge numbers and the date their tour of duty began and ended.

I have returned to the academy numerous times during my 27 year career with the CHP. The first place I go is to the memorial fountain for reflection. Every time I return there are new name plates with the names, badge numbers and the date their tour of duty began and ended.

The moment I learned of Tom's death my mind instantly flashed to that memorial fountain. The shine on the brass name plate that will be placed on the memorial fountain in your memory will never be able to replace the light that shined from you.

God bless you Tom.
