To Cpl Cusack's family:
You are in my prayers as I know what it feels like to get that trooper walking up to tell you that your loved one has died in the line of duty. My first husband was a trooper in N.C. and died in 2001. You have begun a long & often lonely road but there are many other survivors, families & co-workers of Kevin who will be there to help you. Time doesn't heal the pain of your loss as you will always have a hole in your heart but time will help you will learn to deal with your pain/grief/loneliness. In time, your memories of good times & laughter will replace the ache in your heart but it does take a lot of time. Take care of yourself & let the tears fall when they need but let the laughter come when it can. God be with you and wrap his loving arms around you and carry you now & forever!

I feel very blessed to have known Kevin. He could be stern to the point of his mere presence intimidating rookie officers, but he had this wonderful sense of humor when you got to know him. He was all business on the side of the road as all good Troopers should be. I recall one wreck that we were both dispatched to as an "ejection". I arrived on scene about 30 seconds ahead of Kevin. There was a red pickup truck on its roof and the debris field looked as if the entire Library of Congress had been in the bed as it rolled through several yards. EMS was attending to one young man and as I walked towards them I saw something else face down in the roadway. Kevin pulled up, got out and walked towards me. Together we stood there looking at our "ejection"... a face down, five foot tall dancing skeleton wearing a tuxedo coat and a top hat that had been riding shotgun for Halloween. That was one of the few times that I ever saw Kevin just laugh out loud on a call in the roadway and it was wonderful! Kevin, brother, you will be greatly missed by all of us. Rest in Peace and may angels wings be wrapped around your family and Troop to give them comfort.

I remember the last time I saw you which was earlier this year. You stopped by my station on your way home. You were talking about that you stopped a car on Highway 52 earlier that night which was 90 miles away. When you were leaving you referred to me as "Corporal." Anytime you feel like stopping by we will always be here.

Rest In Peace

Kevin was a special person. He touched the lives of many during his time here on earth. My prayers are with Sara, Casey, Richard, Melissa and his mother during this difficult time. I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love.

Cpl Cusack was not only a co-worker he was a friend. I got to know him well through ouy my career from the Hurricane deplyments to bike weeks to just everyday patroling. He will be deeply miss and could never be replaced. He looked after his men even if he took a little he from the brass. So when we remember Cpl Kevin Cusack we know down deep that what he would want us doing is patroling the highways of South Carolina. Cpl Cusack it is your turn to patrol the streets of heaven. Although we may not understand why he chose you now God had his reasons and now may you rest in peace. My deep sympothy is to the family and may God help you through this difficult time. But know that your Son,Father Brother,Husband was one of the best friends and Troopers I have ever met. Rest in peace D-20.
