Yesterday was 10 years since you left us. You left us with questions of how, why and how can we put one foot in front of the other and carry on. I’ve asked myself these questions over and over in my mind hundreds of times in the last 10 years. Your footprints remain engraved in the highways of this Post just as your kind soul has left it’s mark on the hearts of those who loved and respected you. To this very day, I can be riding around in my patrol car and pass a spot where your memory jumps up and hits me like a ton of bricks. Whether it be one of your favorite checkpoint locations, restaurants, or a classic George Jones hit on the radio; you still have a way of showing up. Sometimes this results in me laughing out loud and banging the steering wheel until I realize the person one car over is watching me and thinks I’m nuts. Then sometimes I cry like a baby. It just depends on how you show up. All too often in tragedies like this we as the surviving friends and family focus too hard on the aforementioned questions. I realized one day that I would have to forget the why’s, how’s and what if’s and be thankful for what I gained from your friendship. You taught me first and foremost to rely on my faith in God and to be a man of character. How to utilize common sense in my everyday duties and always do what’s right. How to have compassion for those who are downtrodden and are carrying heavy burdens. You always said; “If you stop someone that doesn’t look like they can afford a gallon of milk, they don’t need a ticket. A warning will do just fine. I have two children of my own now and catch myself shadowing you in how you raised Sarah, Casey and Richard. I am now in my 21st year with the SCHP. This is the same number of years you had in when you ended your tour. With 4 years left before retirement ; I look back on my career thus far and can truly say that you made me into the trooper that I am today and though you are not here physically, you are forever riding shotgun in my heart. Until we meet again; Rest In Peace My Good Friend.

From middle school and high school until we worked the same shift together at the Lake City Police Dept, even though you went to pursue your dream of being a South Carolina State Trooper, you were like a brother to me and always will be. Think about you every day, miss you brother, until we meet again.

“You were my strength when I was weak, you were my voice when I couldn’t speak, you were my eyes when I couldn’t see, you saw the best there was in me, lifted me up when I couldn’t reach, you gave me faith cause you believed.
I’m everything I am, because you loved me.”

CPl Cusack pulled me over within a week of me getting my drivers license in Lake Wylie, SC. He was super professional and gave me a rare break. I interacted with him many times over the next couple years as I worked at the local volunteer rescue squad. He was a great man and is greatly missed.

CPL. D. KEVIN CUSACK MARCH 13, 1965 - MARCH 27, 2010
A Big newspaper editor, sore because he got a speeding ticket,
tries to catch Sherriff Andy Taylor doing wrong.
The prosecuting witness turns out to be a witness for the defense
when Deputy Barney Fife tells the Court, "A good lawman don't go
so much by the book as he does by the heart."
Such seemed to be same with CPL. Kevin Cusack, right from the very start.
While this cop was a stickler for detail, and he didn't cut too much slack
He was fair and honest in his dealings, for this he received much respect back.
He thought the driving age was set too low, even while teaching his own to drive,
In twenty years he witnessed so many accidents, when kids didn't come home alive
His smoke grey cruiser of the Highway Partol glided down the SC 200 back road.
Temporary duty in Lancaster Co. now in the wee hours of the nght he drove.
Rain soaked shoulders, loose gravel, what made the cruiser tires slide?
For whatever reason the car overturned, now our beloved Warrior has died.
We stand around like sheep without a Shepherd, not knowing what to do next.
Just going through motions, memories flood like oceans, Time has slowed to ticks.
Our hearts go out to a mother and three kids, Our beloved one's life and joy,
Soon we will celebrate a life, that we are sure has gone on to glory.
So, what can we do to honor this Warrior, this Trooper who has cared so much for us?
You know all the slogans that makes a safe driver, just think of him as you react.
Drive safely and remember, the Trooper is your friend, a brother of CPL. Kevin CUSACK.

The second I read this, I thought about you.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 2nd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace. Thanks to your friends for sharing their memories and devotion to you through their reflections.

Rest In Peace.
