I never had the privilege of meeting Ofc Bonneau, but I knew him by his character. He was a fellow police officer. A man who chose to wear a badge & a uniform, and to put himself in harms way for others. James was doing just that "going in harms way for someone else" the night he died, and he will always be remembered for it.
They say a person is never really gone as long as they are remembered.....James will always be remembered by his family, his friends, his coworkers, and his extended family here at DHPD.
GOD Bless & GOD Speed

Rest in peace brother you have made the ultimate sacrific. Times are tough and are only going to get tougher. City leaders want to take take and take from public safety. You will be missed by all your family and friends, including your brothers in blue.

The years I spent as your boss were filled with smiles, laughter, and a desire to strangle you! You were the best of the best. I hired you because someone said you were a good guy, I had no idea at the time how right they were. You were the best of the best. God speed my friend, for you were so much more than an employee. I will never forget you. We of the sarcasm must always stick together.

REST IN PEACE BROTHER
"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

You Walk Alone
Lewis Riefstahl

No use in wistful dreaming.. we’ll
forever be a “Cop”
And the term is seldom kindly meant,
nor will its usage stop.
We likewise know we’re mentioned
rarely in a gracious tone,
For despite suave words of greeting,
A Policeman walks Alone.

And if you’d be an Officer, then
reconcile your heart
To the knowledge that from others
you’ll forever be Apart.
They’ll seek you out when Trouble
comes and plead in frenzied tone,
But once the case is closed, again
you’ll find you walk Alone.

Bone,

We are going to miss you man. You dry sense of humor, never knowing when you were or weren't joking........always remembered. The Lord called your number today, we dont know why, but you served an important part in His plan. Thank you for your service, brother, thank you for your sacrifice. You are not a hero for how you died, but how you lived your life. Thank you for being who you were, always consistently, you. You will always be remembered Jim, never forgotten, your sacrifice will be honored forever.

I am so sorry to hear of this tragic loss. I worked with officers for over 20 years, and they are all near and dear to my heart...even though I never met Officer Bonneau, I feel this loss deep in my heart....many prayers and thoughts go out to his family, as well as the officers in blue who are grieving this loss. We lost a dear friend in our dept. a few years ago, it forever changes the department. Rest in peace, my friend.......
