My heart goes out to you, your family & friends, as you are laid to rest today. Your bravery, courage,& dedication enabled you to be an outstanding officer. For more than 16 years you have stood on the side of "right." As a commander you have modeled and instructed good police tactics and techniques, but nothing can prepare an officer from the intent of a criminal mind. You leave behind many who loved you and many who didn't know you personally, but understand and applaud you for setting a fine example to others and your willingness to stand between the criminal element and we, the people. Without you, and dedicated officers like you, our world would be ruled by crime and chaos. I grieve that you had to lay down your life for such a noble cause, and that your life was cut down way too soon... The sanctity of life is cherished by most, but there are a few who reflect the end justifies the means... and to them, I pray for swift, retributive justice. As the mother of a Valley officer, and the widow of a law enforcement officer, I salute you, Lt. Eric Shudandler, for a job well done... for your outstanding dedication to public service... for the bravery and courage you have displayed on this and many occasions... and for the gold standard you have set for others as a person, a family man, and a friend. May you rest in peace...

My condolences to Lt. Shuhandler's family, friends and the Gilbert Police Department. Loosing someone is never easy and it always seems more devastating when an officer of the law that is protecting his city is taken away.

For Gilbert PD, a quote from the "Bixby Letter" written by President Abraham Lincoln on November 21, 1864

"...I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they(he) died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

A. Lincoln

I am in Afghanistan right now, in the army, happy to have some time on the internet to email the fam and friends. Being from AZ myself I like to read the news about what's going on at home. I have friends and family who wear badges all around the valley so when a headline says "officer killed", my heart skips a beat. I just read about the LT from Gilbert, and I am so sorry for the loss to his family. Now we don't wear badges in the army, but I promise there will be a black band worn.
