I awoke the next morning to the news of what had happened. The family in blue is extended but it hurts just as much as if it was one of my guys. Thank you for your service to the City of Gilbert and to the State of Arizona. You will be missed by all. Rest in peace knowing that we have the watch now. God Speed Brother

All too often, we stand in doubt.
All too often, we do without.
But those who know of all we do,
stand in awe of men like you.

God bless such as him, their families
and the country they stand for.

I thank you and your family for the ultimate sacrifice. So many take for granted that you protected all of us from the very ones who should have feared you. Though the loss is unbearable to those left behind, we know justice will be served in the end.

"For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer."

With the utmost respect and honor in your memory,

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I became familiar with Eric when he was a Recruit Training Officer at the basic training academy and again during his lieutenant's oral board. He was knowledgeable, competent, physically fit; becoming a tremendous role model and leader for the young recruits and officers. His love of street level police work never diminished as illustrated by what he was doing when murdered. You will be mourned, missed, but not forgotten. May God bless your family, friends, and agency during this most difficult of times. Rest in peace, your watch is over; we will carry the torch from here.

My dearest sympathy to all of the family and partners of Lieutenant Shuhandler. My agency lost Deputy Phillip Rodriguez due to a fatal car accident a few years ago. I can tell you from experience, you will never forget Eric. It does not get easier with time. The only thing that helps you heal, is to stick together and support each other through this tough time. My thoughts and prayers will be with all of you. I am so sorry for your loss.
