Just yesterday James called me at 6:30 am to ask if I could pick him up a bagel on my way to work. Naturally I did, so we had breakfast in my office. He has become a permanent fixture at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club and Lodge & Club as he is an MSD deputy assigned to our specific area. He has a key to my office so he can stop in for a break during night shift or use the bathroom and not worry about his duty belt. He's a big dude, maybe 6' 3" and 270 lbs; 300 with all his gear on. Last year he was sitting in one of the nice chairs in my office and broke it; falling flat on his back. We all laughed.

He wasn't afraid of anyone or anything and to most, he was very intimidating. However, when he talked about his miniature poodles and how his wife ran the household, I knew he was just a big softy. He played with my son on several occasions, letting him sit in his police car. He would always take special care of our employees here at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club; something every employee appreciated. We met in September of 2008, about a month into my new job when a guest reported $3,000 missing from his room. James and I instantly bonded and hung out every day he was on duty. He has been there when we needed him most; showing up out of nowhere most of the time. He helped employees recover stolen property and would call to check in on us even when he was off duty.

Yesterday afternoon he came in to chat and before leaving, like always, we gave each other a "pound" of the knuckles and I told him to be safe. He replied with "I'll catch up with you later".

Take care, brother. I'll catch up with you later.

James is an awesome man and will be sorely missed.
