For Trooper Paul G. Richey:

Of all the calls for assistance that we respond to, the law officer has the most to fear when arriving at the scene of the domestic complaint. Unknown is the situation. Tempers flare, heated words have been exchanged, and agitation is at it's peak. The responding officer rolls onto the scene, but no amount of preparation is enough.

Most domestic situations are simply a call for an intermediary and violence is usually avoided as informal "counseling" takes place. Another call is answered and peace has been made.

However, the worst situations can occur. Today, involving our brother Paul, the worst did occur - he lost his life. Another who was disturbed and twisted beyond description used a firearm to kill Paul suddenly, from hiding, and without warning. And then, as most all cowards do after slaying a law officer by surprise, he took his own life. Selfishly, too, the culprit killed his own innocent spouse. Such is the deed that we have seen before - and, sadly, that we are sure to see again.

Paul, on this day, has demonstrated, as others have done before him, that he would not swerve from the path of duty. He has demonstrated clearly that despite the ridicule and criticism, and sometimes the insults to our profession, we stand as soldiers-of-the-law. We are not priests or ministers. We are not scientists or professors. We are not anything when we wear our badge-of-office other than soldiers sworn-to-duty, sworn-to-protect and sworn-to-die - if need be, to keep others safe. It is our duty. It has always been our duty. It always will be our duty - forever.

We pray for Paul. May he graciously be welcomed into the presence of our creator, as he is met by the legion-of-heros who have gone before him. May they embrace him as the latest hero-among-heros. He has earned his place among them. We pray for Paul's family, friends, co-workers and all who care about him. We pray they never forget the all of the reasons Paul brought light into their life. May they be ready to reach-out, at the appropriate times, to give one another strength and support.

I am proud to render Trooper Paul G. Richey a final salute.
