I grew up in the New Ulm and served on the New Ulm Police Dept. I will retire this year but before I do, I will ride for John F. Herzog in the Law Enforcement United bike ride in Washington, D.C. His dedication to the people of New Ulm was demonstrated by his commitment to serve on both the police and fire departments. My ride is dedicated to him. He is gone but not forgotten.

John F. Herzog was my Great Grandfather and namesake. In addition to being a police officer he also served as the Fire Chief for New Ulm. I still have his Billy club, handcuffs, and whistle. Our family is very proud of his service.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 84th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Your memory will always be honored and revered as time never diminishes respect.

The current officers of the NUPD remember you and your long over due credit that you rightfully should have gotten many years ago. Rest easy brother.
