Today was mostly anger. When I finished my shift and watched the news the surreal became a reality when I listened to the names and looked at a picture of a great former trooper I used to meet for coffee. Short sleeves and gortex rain pants, soft spoken but always quick to offer up to handle a call. A guy who could speak fluent NASCAR and ESPN - the son of a Tacoma cop who kept a cherry muscle car in his garage. A competent cop who was humble in demeanor. A guy who nodded an acknowledgment to people - just someone you wanted to be around. As a boot trooper I appreciated the encouragement and acknowledgement I received because when you're new you don't want to screw up. When a guy with a few years in says, 'it's all good' and laughs and shakes his head while taking a dip after you explain the crazy violator who called you every epitaph known and has demanded your supervisors name. That's the kind of stand up guy that seeing him and his fellow officers driven away from a final watch makes you just sit dumbstruck and unable to hold back the tears.

Trooper Mike Mong
Washington State Patrol - former detachment member
