Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Corporal Michael Joseph Roberts

Although I did not know Cpl. Roberts it has taken me until now to find the strength to leave a reflection. I visit odmp often and while it breaks my heart each and every time an officer is added, Cpl.Roberts death was to close to home. I will continue to pray daily that God will wrap Cindy and Adam in his loving arms, especially during this holiday season. Cpl.Roberts-you will never be forgotten!

It has taken me a while to leave this message. On that terrible night in August, I was watching the news and thought to myself...some years ago I did joint investigations with law enforcement, for child abuse, and in that same area of Tampa. It was always such a dangerous place to be. I recently bought a T-Shirt in your honor, which I wear proudly, and my prayers are there for your wife & son whose grief must be tremendous. Thank you for serving the City of Tampa.

Dear Cindy I can't get you off of my mind. Meeting you at Mike's Resting place. I was so glad to meet you although you could not stop shaking. Reach out for help and speak to others when you can. Your son was so precious. I can feel your hurt and pain and I prayed and will continue praying that God will let me take some of the pain for you. I know you lost more that just a husband. Mike was your soul mate and very best friend and you have to believe he still is. My Lil' David and your Mike did not want to leave their children and wife. One day we will understand. We have to believe in the big picture that is hard to imagine. Pray often and when you are angry at God he will understand. We have to make our our Angels proud of us and remember their laughter and hearts. God Bless you and your son.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

What a terrible tragedy. A little boy left to grow up without a father. At least when his boy is old enough, he will know his daddy died as a hero. Rest in Peace and Thank You.

His Judgment Day:
The officer stood and faced his God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shinning, Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Officer, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek To my church have you been true?"
The officer squared his shoulder and said, "No, Lord, I guess I aint, Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was rough, And sometimes I've been violent Because the streets are tough.
But I never took a penny That wasn't mine to keep.. Though I worked a lot of overtime, when the bills got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept an unmanly tear.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't...I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne, where the saints often trod. As the officer waited quietly for the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, Officer. You've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell"

Corporal Roberts, I heard of your passing from a friend of mine in the Tampa PD. I read that you were his FTO for a brief period of time. Words will never fully express the pain and anger that we all feel inside. For when one of us falls we all fall. I listened with tears in my eyes as your final roll call played. I never had the chance to meet you but I am sure that you were and always will be a great officer. Watch over us brother. Rest in Peace. You will be missed but never forgotten...

We visited our son's grave At Florida National Cemetary today like we do every Sunday. Bob, a groundskeeper we have become friends with escorted us to Corporal Roberts resting place. David left behind 3 children. His youngest was the same age as Adam. She will be 8 years old in a couple of months. It is not supposed to be this way. We have to keep our faith and remember that E.O.W. means Eternally on Watch. Hero's never die. Our love for our son grows stronger everyday. We thank God for the 26 years 10 months and 2 days we had him with us on this earth. His children help us keep his memory alive. Adam will carry on his Legacy. God bless you all. To his Mom the hurt never goes away but you will learn how to live with it because you know we will all be reunited again. This Poem helps us to cope at times. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
Our Family Chain
We little knew that morning, God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly. In death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, YOu did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, Your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you, You are always by ouir side. OUR FAMILY CHAIN is broken, And nothing seems the same, But as god calls us one by one, the chain will link again.
