Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Shane Thomas Detwiler

Lord Jesus, as we watch America’s Peace Officers succumb to the wicked and evil in this world, Shot and Killed in the Line-of-Duty, it becomes difficult for us to pick up and move forward. Our communities are on the brink of exploding with tension. In light of the peace officers who are no longer with us, I pray for endurance for our communities and law enforcement agencies. Carry us through this time of strife, that through our struggles, our bonds may grow even more unbreakable. In Your mighty and holy name, I pray. Amen.

Holy Scriptures on Law Enforcement’s Mission:

“For the policeman [peace officer] does not frighten people who are doing right; but those doing evil will always fear him. So if you don’t want to be afraid, keep the laws and you will get along well. The policeman [peace officer] is sent by God to help you. But if you are doing something wrong, of course you should be afraid, for he [the peace officer] will have you punished. He [the peace officer] is sent by God for that very purpose. Obey the laws, then, for two reasons: first, to keep from being punished, and second, just because you know you should.” [Romans 13:3-5 TLB]

[Jesus Said,] “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” [John 15:13 ESV]

And he [Jesus] said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.” [Luke 23:43 ESV]

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons [children] of God.” [Matthew 5:9 ESV]

“And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” [Isaiah 6:8 ESV]

10 years passes so quickly. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten by my family. I will never forget the events of that day. The challenge coin from your foundation that your mother gave me rides patrol with me everyday as that reminder. Although I never got to meet you, I know from all the stories I've heard what a wonderful person you were. My heart goes out to your entire family, both blood and blue, on this 10th anniversary of your passing. May the peace of God's grace and glory be over them.

Scripture assures us that, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called [children] of God.” Matthew 5:9 ESV and “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13 ESV.

As a military daughter, I thank your family for your sacrifice for our country as a Veteran first and his duty that saved a civilian for whom I know the son of. Your loved one was a police officer and the irony that the son of the utility worker is an officer is just proof that God works in mysterious ways.
My Dad was accidentally killed by bad medicine from the VA and it hurt to the core. Today, his legacy is changing the way VA responds to our Veterans and their families. Knowing he is at peace and that good can come from bad, even when all I want is more time with my Dad; I somehow sleep better. Something we military families never retire from knowing our time with our loved ones is borrowed from the minute they enlist and they can be called home; even after their service to our country is over, as they never truly stop serving. They just change uniforms and hats. Beings your loved one was also a police officer...double "Thank You". His life is what young people should model after as a Hero!
I pray our VA has stepped up in support of your family, if not I know his officer brothers would have. I pray you find comfort knowing your loved one passed doing what he 'lived' to do and your "family" is so much larger than we realize. Unfortunately, I didn't find this out until after my Dad was gone.
God Bless,

It will be two years this week since you were taken from us; it seems like an eternity. We all miss you every day, and believe me when I say we'd do anything to undo the horrible events on that day. But, that won't happen. Instead, we continue to honor you and your memory by carrying on, and cherishing our memories of you. Rest in peace my friend, we too shall work our final shift one day, go 10-42 forever, and join you on eternal watch in Heaven. Miss you brother.......
