I am so sorry to hear this. You were a good friend, a good Marine, and I am sure you were a great Deputy. I will remember the trip to Idaho that a few of us made. It was a fun time, and your family was very nice. Rest In Peace Brother. We got the watch from here.

For Deputy Sheriff Monte Matthews:

We in the law enforcement spend much our time patrolling one of the most dangerous battlefields -- a United States highway. In spite of our training, we understand that we too could be a casualty.

It is always sad to learn that one of our own has lost his/her life in the performance of duty -- not answering a call -- but simply by being on the highway. It should not happen, but it does.

Leroy stands among our heros of heros because he was doing what we all do -- our job.

Recognizing that Leroy was doing what he loved when he died brings all of us some measure of comfort. Some understanding. His family and those close to him are in our thoughts and our prayers.

To Deputy Sheriff Monte (Leroy) Matthews I am proud to render a final salute.

Cpl. Ralph D. Fiorenza (Ret.)
Pennylvania State Police
