I am very proud to say that I am the great grandson of William Wilbur "Boss" Bias. At age 70, I have been inspired my entire life by his selfless actions in defense of his friends, neighbors and the citizens of Proctorville, Ohio.

My mother, Marshal Bias's granddaughter, was spending the night with her grandparent's on July 23, 1935 and they were having dinner when he received a "Disturbance" call.

Assuming his responsibility as Town Marshal, he immediately responded to the call. The results of he response are accurately reported above.

One of my most cherished life possessions is the badge my great grandfather was wearing the night he died. The badge was given to me by his daughter, my grandmother, Ruth Bias Edwards.

My great grandfather's action and courage were always close in mind during my own service as a United States Army, Special Forces officer. My hope was always that I could respond as courageously as the man I knew about, but was never fortunate enough to meet.

My deep and sincere thanks to Chief Bill Murphy, the current Police Chief of Proctorville, for his efforts to create this posting on the Officer Down Memorial.

Very sincerely and with great respect,
Thomas A. (Tom) Ross
