Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Robert Bernard Helmke

I just finished my fourth round of chemo out of six rounds. To add onto my last reflection, I was diagnosed in June with stage 3s bulky classic hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of blood cancer; cancer of the lymph nodes/immune system. Throughout this journey, it has been hard knowing that I now have the same thing that killed my dad(not the same type, just cancer in general). Although he lost his fight, I will beat this for him. I never thought I would have to endure something like this at 17 years old. I miss my dad every day and I hope I’m able to say I’m cancer-free one day soon. I have been fundraising for blood cancer research and have since raised about $2.3k, which is a positive that has also kept me going.

I went to high school with Rob. I just found out through Facebook about his cause of death. Rob was an intense baseball player. I was just catcher. I had the best time of my life trying to catch that guy. Rest in peace Rob

Bob and I spent four months together in IOBTC #122 back in 1992, and were coworkers for a few years at JFK. He was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. I will never forget him. RIP, brother. See you in Heaven. Praying for his family. May God bless you all.

On June 15, 2021, a little over a month before my dad’s 14th death anniversary, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer at 17 years old. I’ve been thinking of my dad every day since I found out and I will fight as hard as he did. I know that he is looking out for me and I will get through this for him and especially my mom because she has already lost too much. I love you mom and dad.

On July 28th this year, it will be 12 years since my dad passed away. I miss him everyday. I will always cherish the short amount of time I got to spend with him, and the few memories I have of him. I love you so much dad.

I attended elementary school with Robert and had the pleasure to be in many of the same classes with him. It is extremely upsetting to hear of his passing. He was one of the nicest guys I have ever met. I also remember he was was one of the best athletes in our school. Thank you Robert for your service and your sacrifice !! RIP my friend !!

On Saturday 9/10/11, the street intersection of Gibbs Pond Rd and Smithtown Blvd in Nesconset, Long Island NY was named after my husband PO Robert Helmke. It is at the intersection of a brand new 9/11 Responders Remembered Park, honoring all of those who have died of terrible illnesses since 9/11/01. Thank you to all who attended who made that day so special. I am honored to not only remember a great man and father to Garrett and Amelia, but a great Police Officer, former Customs & Immigration Officer and Sgt in the USAF.

Officer Helmke was one of the kiddest person I ever met. He helped me through my darkest days, when I was brutally abused by a criminal. He used to visit me at my house, making sure I was safe and not in danger anymore.

I miss you so very much Officer Helmke. I wished soo much one day I can come visit you and thank you, but God had other plans for us. I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kind and warm heart and for all your help. You are in my heart, my memories and most of all YOU WERE IN MY LIFE! May you rest in peace!

Your heroism and service is honored today, the third anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. We will never forget any of our 9/11 heroes. I pray for the solace of all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever.

Rest In Peace
