Reflections for Detective Joseph Robert Free

Det Free (my Great Uncle)
I remember my grandfather (your brother) telling the stories of you growing up and then joining the Houston Police… The story goes you and your partner took one of the first cars (I wanna say the HPD had 2 or 3 at the time) to go arrest this guy… Our entire family is proud of you - I actually kind of followed your footsteps and did 21 years in the U.S. Army Special Forces… I met one of your grandsons (my daddy’s cousin) - he lives in our (Your) hometown…

Your heroism and service is honored today as we approach the 97th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer. He was shot twice when ambushed on April 23rd when he was on a foot pursuit of two bank robbers, 93 years after you were killed.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

Rest In Peace.

Phyllis Loya
mother of fallen officer Larry Lasater
