Skip was a great friend and NCO to me while I was stationed with him at Eglin AFB. He helped me out a lot while I was a young airman. He taught me how to take care of my troops, my friends and myself. I am very sad to see such a great person go. My condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to his family. This is a very sad day for the law enforcement community. You will be remembered by a lot of people who had the honor of knowing you and working with you Skip.

For Deputy Sheriff Warren York and Deputy Sheriff Burton Lopez:

The call to a family argument or dispute stands among the most potentially dangerous call a law officer can arrive to handle. Nobody knows what awaits and most of us feel the tension until we make can make a contact and size-up a situation. As always, our effort is to calm, control and make the situation safe. Our last thought is to effect an arrest.

For Deputies Lopez and York they were not given a chance. A killer struck by surprise and with deadly force. He murdered the officers sent to help. And, then the culprit fled to be contronted by other officers and forced them to kill him. It is what cowards do. They never face their deeds. They take the easy way out.

For the families, co-workers and people who know and respect Burt and Skip I extend to you my deepest sympathy. I can only hope and pray that time will heal you and bring you some understanding that what these two deputies did this day is the ultimate service of law officers anywhere. They served those they were sworn to protect, they stood-up for justice and they died to make their corner of the world a little safer.

As retired state trooper and a retired deputy sheriff (Lake County FL) I render these officers a final salute.

Your agency has lost two honorable and worhty brothers and Gods kingdom has received them with open arms and an everlasting flow of love for their services. Brother Skip know that although you now serve in Gods Police Department your heart for service here will never be forgotten but will always be used as a model of what we know our brothers and sisters in the badge will follow. Those you have left behind will care for your family and will never let you be forgotten. God bless, rest in Peace. In Christ.
