My brother,
I read every reflection left for you by your loved ones, friends, and brothers and sisters in uniform. It is clear that you were respected and loved by everyone your life crossed paths with. Your brave actions on 4/24/09 speak louder than words ever could. You gave your life while saving someone else's, the life of a brother. There is great honor in that. I admire your loyalty and devotion and will honor you always. Thank you for your service. You will always be in my prayers. Rest easy my brother.

“Dexter”

Why did you have to leave so soon?
We had just talked that afternoon.

You were laughing and carrying on,
About your next “money-making” invention.

Had we only known-
That afternoon was going to end so wrong.

Every day you put your life on the line –
Leaving your wife and son behind.

You paid the ultimate price…
Your wife and son represent the supreme sacrifice.

It has been extremely hard to face the fact…
You are gone and never coming back.

A great cop, martial arts teacher, husband, father, friend –
Why did it all have to tragically end?

We will all remember, 3 years ago, to the day…
You were then laid to rest with Honors, in such a glorious way…

For your name and legacy will still live on…
In our memories and in the face of your son, William Cody Hammond.

Officer Dexter Hammond was a good man. He was a caring friend. And especially he was a loving husband and father. He was a outstanding police officer. But most importantly Dexter was a hero. Not by choice and certainly not by chance. Dexter was a hero by purpose. Officer Hammond was always faithful to the job that he loved so much. Dexter was happy rush to recieve that call. But on that fateful day Officer Dexter Hammond was takin from us. He was takin from his loved ones, from his fellow officers, and from his friends. And most of all from his wife and son. Officer Dexter Hammond accepted the silent but ever present danger of a public safety law enforcement career, as all officers and deputies do. It take courage, it takes conviction, and all to often it takes sacrifice to be a law enforcement officer. His death is diffcult for everyone. But let us take pride in the fact that he died doing what he choose to do and what he loved to do. Serving the Headland Community as a police officer. Officer Dexter Hammond answered the call of duty. As a friend he answered the call of loyalty. As a husband and father he answered the most important call of all. The call of unconditional love. Officer Dexter Hammond death will serve as a constant reminder to me when I become a police officer that the life of a police officer is anything but routine. When I become a police officer I will always remember Officer Dexter Hammond as I carry out my duties. I will be mindful of his sacrifice, and the circumstances in which he has gone to meet Jesus. Officer Dexter Hammond's wonderful life and tragic death was far from routine. May the memory of Officer Dexter Hammond never leave our mind. May his spirit never leave our hearts. And may his bravery be a inspiration to us all. God has called a good man home, but he has left us all with a mermory of a wonderul son, a brave fatber, a loving husband, a devoted friend, and a deticated police officer.

Future Police Officer

Officer Dexter Hammon was a man of few words. I met officer Hammond when he first was appointed Chief of Police in Midland City, Alabama. At the time of Chief Hammonds appointment MCPD was unorganized and had very little leadership. Chief Hammond changed that. He brought pride, dignity, and respect when he assumed command of the department.

I had and still do have the utmost respect for Chief Hammond. I had the honor of interacting alongside Chief Hammond and was impressed by his leadership style. On the day of Chief Hammonds death, I was in the ER where they brought him to. I could not hide the tears that fell that day because I lost a good friend that day. I know that Dexter is looking down from above, and watching over all his brothers and sisters in law enforcement. While I am not an law enforcement officer, Dexter was a true friend and I will miss dearly. Dexter is a HERO!

To my brother it has been 1 year today, I cant say this year has been easy because I miss you so much. I do think of all the good times we had growing up. I was glad to have been at the hospital when you was brought in that night and so glad we had time that morning together. You will never be forgotten in no hearts that has ever known you. I am so proud of you and the courage you should that night, you helped many people. The family stands very proud of our HERO every day that passes. To everyone that has wrote such nice thing about my brother, thank you! We will always stand behind the badge and the thin blue line, we also have other police officers in our family and our support is still 100% behind them. May all the men and women in blue be safe and God be with you. The amount of support we had from so many people and departments I can't thank you enough. So my brother rest in piece. I love you so much.
