I have so many questions, as a man. As a father, I see clearly, how much you sacrificed for me and my brother. You were the only man that I considered to be my father. You stepped in and helped me grow into a man, and I know how to be a dad because of you. Thank you dad, Wish I could I say this to you. I love you.

its been a while since i left a note but your always in my thoughts. when i see the rookies on the streets now i remember when you were in the car training with me. even though i chewed you out gave you a hard time when you did not know where a street was and had to pull back on the ropes and say slow down dude. i will always have a special place in my heart for you, you were not just one of my officers you were my friend and i am proud to have been in your life.

My brother,
I read every reflection left for you by your loved ones, friends, and brothers and sisters in uniform. It is clear that you were respected and loved by everyone your life crossed paths with. Your brave actions on 4/24/09 speak louder than words ever could. You gave your life while saving someone else's, the life of a brother. There is great honor in that. I admire your loyalty and devotion and will honor you always. Thank you for your service. You will always be in my prayers. Rest easy my brother.

“Dexter”

Why did you have to leave so soon?
We had just talked that afternoon.

You were laughing and carrying on,
About your next “money-making” invention.

Had we only known-
That afternoon was going to end so wrong.

Every day you put your life on the line –
Leaving your wife and son behind.

You paid the ultimate price…
Your wife and son represent the supreme sacrifice.

It has been extremely hard to face the fact…
You are gone and never coming back.

A great cop, martial arts teacher, husband, father, friend –
Why did it all have to tragically end?

We will all remember, 3 years ago, to the day…
You were then laid to rest with Honors, in such a glorious way…

For your name and legacy will still live on…
In our memories and in the face of your son, William Cody Hammond.
