Reflections for Police Officer John Raymond Hege

Officer Hege, who served in death as well as in life. May you rest in peace and may your loved ones know that time does not diminish the memory of your service and sacrifice. We lost four of the best that day, and our hearts are deeply saddened by the loss. Know that your examples still continue to inspire those that come after you.

I knew john in his youth, I was his Merit badge counselor at Camp Marin Sierra Boy Scout Camp. john was a handful at the time and actually threw a hatchet at me because i scolded him. I wanted to send him home but the camp director said to work with him. I came back to the camp when I 21 and fresh out of Marine bootcamp and john, then in high school was working as a councilor and had earned the rank of Eagle. In the Scouting community i have learned two other officers where also Eagle scouts. I share these stores to all of the adults I train as youth leaders. These 4 officers will be missed

I have laid down my life in service to all of you.
I have been a part of the fabric that has held the line between your safety and your victimization.
As I now become a part of the rich history of law enforcement, please remember me always for I have left behind those who loved and depended upon me.
I have given my life so that others may live in peace.
My partners and my agency, please remember my family, their loss, and don’t let time soften your compassion for them.
You guard the gate now and I will continue my watch from above.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the third anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. I will always remember hearing the news coverage that day of the tragic news. I was saddened, angry and dismayed that our Bay Area police community had been dealt the blow of four noble men protecting our community being shot.

I am praying for the solace of all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever, Your family is in my heart's embrace today.

Rest In Peace.

Every year since 2009 when we lost you and three of your follow officers, Sergeants Dunakin, Sakai and Romans, I have made the blue ribbons with the 51 names of the Oakland Police Officers who have died in the line of duty. It is my honor to do this for the fallen officers. The ribbons hang on a tree outside the Warehouse Bar and Grill in Oakland, California for all to see the sacrifice they have made to keep us safe. God bless you all and rest in peace.
