Reflections for Police Officer John Raymond Hege

"My Brother"

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was idealistic and believed he could make a difference.
He was immensely proud of the uniform and the badge and what they represent.
He felt privileged to be of service to his department, his community and to his country.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was friendly, courteous, and polite, yet firm.
He laughed and joked, but was serious when necessary.
He was competent, trained, and professional.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He had a strong sense of right and wrong and became
frustrated when true justice became sidetracked.
He felt the sharp criticism that goes with the job, but he
never wavered.
He stood by and for his fellow officers.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He longed for his family during the long hours.
He worried about them during his shifts and the lonely
weekends, holidays and midnights when they were apart.
He felt guilty about the lost time, but knew his calling
and prayed they would understand.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was a good son, a loving husband, and a devoted father.
He was dedicated to the profession and cared about the
people he served.
He wanted to do the best job that he could and strived to
be the best he could be.
He was a good citizen and a good neighbor.

He was a cop.

Yes, I did know him.
He was a cop, he was my Brother.

Rest in Peace Officer Hege

You will never be forgotten by your Police Brothers and Sisters. Thank you for your service to your country and to your community. Rest in peace Brother are a hero.

I AM A WARRIOR — by Jon F. Hooper
I stand with God. I fight not for glory or fame, for they are momentary.
I fight for those who can’t. I fight for Justice.
I fight for the oppressed and the downtrodden.
And if I should lose my life for these just causes, then I have no regrets, for I serve to protect the innocent.
It matters not where or when, for evil knows no boundaries.
Be it fire, flood, or the threat of tyranny, I will not flee.
Justice is my weapon. Faith is my shield. Hope is my armor.
Cry not at my passing, for it was my honor to fight for you.
Shed not tears of sorrow, but tears of joy:
For now, I stand with God!

I never knew you in life, only from what has been said and written about you. From being adopted, to struggling to be the Police Officer you always dreamed of being you hung in there and lived your dream, if only for a short time. It did not come easy. You sounded like a good man, rest in peace. I am so very sorry.

It is with tremendous sadness that I send this message. As I sat in the Oracle Arena to celebrate Officer Hege's life, I was overwhelmed with the sight of officers from all over the country. These fallen men's lives were celebrated, honored in a big way. Hereos deserve this kind of celebration.

Stay strong Oakland P.D., family and friends of Officer Hege. The world is praying for all of you.

My heart goes out to the families of the Officers and to the City of Oakland, as a retired Officer I to have felt the pain of losing a friend and brother.
The Thin Blue line that keeps us safe is a little thinner right now, but others will step up and fill the void.
We do what we do knowing we may not return to our families, but we do it for ALL the people of our community. may GOD bless all of our men and women in uniform.

Dear Hege Family,
The tragic loss of John Hege is one felt across the nation. Words of consolation seem to be stifled by conflicted emotions at this time. I am so sorry that his job put him in harms way that fateful day. His final gifts are a wonderful tribute to his life.
