Reflections for Sergeant Daniel Takashi Sakai

In March of 2007, Sergeant Sakai and his police dog named Doc came to do a presentation at my school so the children can get a glimpse of police work and how police officers are our friends. My students talked about it for days! We will always remember Sergeant Sakai's connection with the children. A true-to-life action figure and HERO for Oakland!

I AM A WARRIOR — by Jon F. Hooper
I stand with God. I fight not for glory or fame, for they are momentary.
I fight for those who can’t. I fight for Justice.
I fight for the oppressed and the downtrodden.
And if I should lose my life for these just causes, then I have no regrets, for I serve to protect the innocent.
It matters not where or when, for evil knows no boundaries.
Be it fire, flood, or the threat of tyranny, I will not flee.
Justice is my weapon. Faith is my shield. Hope is my armor.
Cry not at my passing, for it was my honor to fight for you.
Shed not tears of sorrow, but tears of joy:
For now, I stand with God!

It is with tremendous sadness that I send this message. As I sat in the Oracle Arena to celebrate Officer Sakai's life, I was overwhelmed with the sight of officers from all over the country. These fallen men's lives were celebrated, honored in a big way. Hereos deserve this kind of celebration.

Stay strong Oakland P.D., family and friends of Sgt. Sakai. The world is praying for all of you.

With Great Sadness,

I want to send my condolences to Officer Sakai's family, friends and colleagues. As a country I think many of us take for granted the role that law enforcement officers play in our communities -- to keep the peace - to keep us safe. This tragedy reminds me to be thankful that people like officer Sakai who make serving their community a focus of their lives. I am also a UC Berkeley grad and an avid outdoorswoman, and next time I go to the Sierra Nevada mountains I will look up and send greetings to officer Sakai. When I see policemen and women I will be sure to thank them for their service, and I will try to serve my community more in the future in honor of all the fallen officers and their families.

My sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and co-workers of Sgt. Sakai. I am incapable of expressing my feelings, as mere words are poor tools for conveying my grief at the loss of these fine officers.

Did I know him? No, but I worked with people just like him, who were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice every time they put on the uniform, to protect the community they served. Faithful to his oath, Sgt. Sakai fulfilled that duty; may God bless and keep him for his fidelity.

Dear Sakai Family,
Emotions run high as I gather my thoughts about the loss of Sgt. Sakai. He rushed in to take charge of a situation which claimed his life. The actions he took every day made him the person we mourn today. His legacy will live on with you and his comrades. Sending you heartfelt regards, today and always.
