Sergeant Dunakin:

During your service last Friday, I learned that you were a band member in high school. I too was a band member, and brother, I feel you on the "tough guy" image. No one around here knows of my band geek days!

While I know you were watching from above, I still need write how amazing the service was. The thousands of badges glistening in the arena lights and the complete silence of thousands shook me to my core. On our way to the Oracle, our procession was miles long -- there were Code 3's for as far as the eye could see. Members of the public lined the streets, stood with signs thanking you, and held their hands over their hearts. Fire rigs were on every freeway overpass, with our firemen friends standing on top of the rigs saluting as we passed below. It was incredibly moving. It was a hero's funeral.

I know my greatest fear is to be forgotten after I'm gone. You need not worry, you will NEVER be forgotten. God Bless You.

Your sarifice and last full measure of devotion will not be forgotton. RIP Brother

"Never forget what they did here. It is rather for us, the living, to be dedicated here to the great task remaining before us - that, from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here, gave the last full measure of devotion - that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain."

All 4 such hansome young men. Cheated out of too many years. No one can begin to understand why things like this happen. It should have never happened. I'm sure the Lord cried as he welcomed these heroes home. Just like we did.

I learned by watching the funeral that you were called "Dunnie" and for some reason that just touched my heart. For such a burly, tough looking guy "Dunnie" just seems so cute!!!

Your loss along with your brother officers brought me to tears (just as the loss of our 4 Newhall CHPs did so many years ago.)

Thank you for your service and sacrifice and please take care of our treoops down here...they need your experience and wisdom and guidance. You can do that from Heaven....all four of you can keep an eye on things down here.

Love you,

How are the mighty fallen
Fallen prey to the brutal street
And the skies wept over those heroes
Where the hills and the flatlands meet

They kept the watch of the city
In service, unabashed
And how we rue the hail that flew
When good and evil clashed

How are the mighty fallen
And the tears of Oakland spilled
For the future that they’ll never know
For their dreams yet unfulfilled

There’s a special place of beauty
Across the horizon’s span
For those slain in the line of duty
Protecting their fellow man
