Officer Matthews was great officer, and a good man. He will be missed by the community and his fellow officers. I know being officer who serves the same area as Officer Matthews, that it has brought his fellow officers closer together as a family, during this trying time.

To the family of Officer Matthews, my heart aches with pain for you today. When I was watching WECT News this morning and they told about this tragedy I could not help but just burst out in tears and pray for you. My husband and I know exactly how you feel today. Our son was working with the Tabor City Police Dept. when he lost his life in a highspeed chase. In fact he had only worked SIX HOURS as a Police Officer. He lost his life on May 15, 2004 which is Police Officers Memorial Day. We cannot begin to explain why these things happen because we are still asking questions. But I can tell you that there is a God that we serve today that will help you and the family go through these trying times. When you find yourself down in the valley so low that you cannot breath look up and cry out for help and I promise you God will reach down with his hand of mercy and love and will lift you up. Please just depend on him and let him help you.
I know that the Wilmington Police Department will be there for you and your family, let them help you and give you comfort. I know that just seeing and officer in uniform and a patrol car can be upsetting to me, but believe me there are times when just seeing one of them and being able to put my arms around them as the mother of a fallen hero helps alot, so let them know you need them and I am sure they will be there.
In the meantime all of you and the Police Department will be in my every prayer. MAY GOD BE WITH ALL OF YOU IS OUR PRAYER!
