Our Fathers kingdom has received another worthy and honorable brother to serve in His Police Dpeartment. Know brother that all your new partners and comrades have also paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving Gods children in their communities. Your name will never br forgotten by those you have left behind and your family will be cared for by your brothers and sisters in the badge. Your world is now free of all pain, free of all disablilties and free of all of the evil forces you faced while serving here on earth. You now have eternal peace and rest, go with God and walk in the footsteps of Jesus.

Police Officer Mark Simmons,

As law officers we accept that our job is difficult one and we rarely complain. We understand that, in life, many problems are associated with severe difficulty. It is the nature of our job. What is hard to understand is w h y tragedy must enter our lives. And, sometimes, with long, long-suffering. It does not appear to be very fitting for a law officer on the "front line" who defends others and who keeps the peace. We expect things to be a little more fair. We expect no a d v a n t a g e, just for things to be a little m o r e fair. The harsh reality is that fairness does not exist in our life...nor anyone else's for that matter.

When Police Officer Mark Simmons, while performing his duty, was struck three years ago and faced the hardships associated with a brain injury, a lot of people must have ask the question--why? Those who asked it over-and-over most likely were those closest to him--his children, his parents, his friends.

The question has no answer because it is a m y s t e r y. Questions have answers, but mysteries do not. Who gets promoted, who gets transferred, who gets recognition, etc., they are all q u e s t i o n s--and they can all be answered. Who will live, who will die, or who will endure a crippling injury, etc., they remain a mystery. No one who knew Mark could provide him with a n y answers-- only words of encouragement: For him to fight, and for him to survive. But, it was not to be. Not here. And, not now.

What we do know is this: That Police Officer Mark Simmons was a cop. He chose his profession. He accepted his lot. He did his job. And, he is our brother. He died in the service of others. Bravely, and with honor. And, that alone, makes him a hero among heros.

To him I render a final salute.

Well done, officer, ...well done.

Cpl. Ralph D. Fiorenza (Ret.)
Pennsylvania State Police
