Police Officer Alex Del Rio,

None of us know when we go to work and put on the uniform if it will be our last tour-of-duty. Each of us simply dons our equipment and begins our shift. What happens next unfolds in a series of adventures accompanied by an assortment of risks. Suddenly we are callled to make a decision. To chase or not to chase. To shoot or not to shoot. The average working person does not make such decisions this vital in their lifetime, if at all. We do. When the worst happens it will be second-guessed by many. It doesn't matter. It simply does not count. As law officers we make decisions and live by them. Sometimes we die by them. Alex Del Rio made the same call many have done and will continue to do. He died not because of any mistake. He died because he was a cop who did not hesitate to to his job. He died doing his job. This alone makes him a hero among heros. To those he was close to we have not the words that can soothe. We have not the words that can bring understanding. And we have no answer to the question..why? We can only stand silent while each of you, in your own way, honor him as a husband, a son, a father, a relative, or a friend.

Pennsylvania State Police

As an extended member of our Sweetwater Police Department Family (Officer Del Rio is nephew to SWPD K-9 Officer Saul Fernandez). We feel a tremendous loss and emptiness and there are no words or actions that can diminish this. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of his family and friends. I did not have the pleasure of meeting Officer Del Rio - but as an extension of SWPD K9 Officer Fernandez I may say that a wonderful young man has again been taken way too soon..Blessings and Godspeed Officer Del Rio, Thank you for your service.

To the Del Rio Family and Hollywood Police Department:

My thoughts and sincere prayers go out to all of you. Know that Alex was a true hero and has done his job well. May he rest in peace- God Speed

“The Final Inspection”
The policeman stood and faced his God, which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining just as brightly as his brass. “Step forward now, policeman. How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To my church have you been true?” The policeman squared his shoulders and said, “No Lord. I guess I ain’t. Because those who carry badges can’t always be a saint. I’ve had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough… and sometimes I’ve been violent because the streets are awful tough. But I never took a penny that wasn’t mine to keep… though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got just too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I’ve wept unmanly tears. I know I don’t deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fear. If you’ve a place for me here, Lord, it needn’t be so grand. I never expected or had too much. But if you don’t…I’ll understand.” There was silence all around the throne where the saints had often trod, as the policeman waited quietly for the judgment of his God. “Step forward now, policeman. You’ve borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on heaven’s streets. You’ve done your time in hell.” –Author unknown

I can't count the number of times I've heard "Why don't you go after the real criminals," as I'm issuing a speeding ticket. This is a tragic example that traffic enforcement is absolutely necessary and that traffic violators do kill people; sometimes other motorists, sometimes the officers who attempt to enforce the traffic laws. I thank Officer Del Rio for his honorable service. He will be missed.
